Goals

Students will develop an understanding of the pythagorean theorem using jelly beans

Students will have a visual understanding of area reflects on pythagorean theoremSlide3

OBJECTIVES

Given a diagram of a scalene right triangle with squares on the border of it, the student will be able to visualize how the

Pythagorean

theorem works.

Given the diagram, the student will be able to make an observation of how the area of the squares relates to the

Pythagorean

theorem of the triangle.Slide4

Materials

Cardboard boxes (set up by teacher)

Jelly Beans

Pencils

Worksheet Slide5

Step one: The layout

 This is the layout of how the diagram would be. This shows the right triangle and its corresponding squares.Slide6

Step two:

The cardboard is glued around the three squares. The students will add the fence of the triangle, but don’t attach it. Student will cover the two squares on the legs of the triangle with jelly beans.

The two boxes should be filled with jelly beans but NOT overlapping, side by side

. Slide7

*This is what the students diagram should look after this step!*Slide8

Step three:

The students will remove the cardboard from the border of the right triangle.

Pushing all the jelly beans to fall into the square on the hypotenuse.

*Make sure the jelly beans are side by side and NOT over lapping!*Slide9

How to Construct the Model

Jelly Beans GaloreSlide10

Reminders For

the students

Make sure to put the triangular border back to verify that all the jelly beans cover the square on the hypotenuse.

Remember can NOT overlap, only side by side! Slide11

conclusion!

What have you discovered doing this activity?

Explain the sum of the areas of the squares on the legs of the right triangle compared with the area of the square on the hypotenuse?

What is the formula for the Pythagorean theorem

?

Do the jelly beans cover the square on the hypotenuse completely and perfectly?Slide12

Extending the

pythagorean

theorem Slide13
