FIRST READING

Isaiah

55:1-9 CEV

Come to the Lord, who is merciful

R: The first reading for the third Sunday in Lent is written in chapter 55 of Isaiah, beginning at verse one.Slide32

Isaiah

55:1-9

The Lord says, If you are thirsty, come and drink water! If you don't have any money, come, eat what you want! Drink wine and milk without paying a cent.

2Why waste your money on what really isn't food? Why work hard for something that doesn't satisfy? Slide33

Isaiah

55:1-9

Listen carefully to me, and you will enjoy the very best foods.

3Pay close attention!Come to me and live. I will promise you the eternal love and loyalty that I promised David.

4

I made him the leader and ruler of the nations; he was my witness to them. Slide34

Isaiah

55:1-9

5

You will call out to nations you have never known. And they have never known you, but they will come running because I am the LORD, the holy God of Israel, and I have honoured you.Slide35

Isaiah

55:1-9

6

Turn to the LORD! He can still be found. Call out to God! He is near. 7

Give up your crooked ways and your evil thoughts. Return to the LORD our God. He will be merciful and forgive your sins. Slide36

Isaiah

55:1-9

8

The LORD says: "My thoughts and my ways are not like yours. 9Just as the heavens are higher than the earth, my thoughts and my ways are higher than yours.

This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks Be to God.Slide37

Psalm 63:1-8

CEV

R: The Psalm is Psalm 63 1You are my God. I worship you.

In my heart, I long for you, as I would long for a stream in a scorching desert.

C:

I have seen your power and your glory in the place of worship. Slide38

Psalm 63:1-8

CEV

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit

As it was in the beginning is now and will be for ever. Amen. Slide41

SECOND READING

1 Corinthians 10:1-13 CEV

Do not take God's grace for granted

R: The second reading is written in chapter 10 of First Corinthians, beginning at verse one. Slide42

SECOND READING

Friends, I want to remind you that all of our ancestors walked under the cloud and went through the sea.

2

This was like being baptized and becoming followers of Moses.

3All of them also ate the same spiritual food 4and drank the same spiritual drink, which flowed from the spiritual rock that followed them. That rock was Christ. Slide43

SECOND READING

5

But most of them did not please God. So they died, and their bodies were scattered all over the desert.

6What happened to them is a warning to keep us from wanting to do the same evil things. Slide44

SECOND READING

7

They worshiped idols, just as the Scriptures say, "The people sat down to eat and drink. Then they got up to dance around." So don't worship idols.

8

Some of those people did shameful things, and in a single day about twenty-three thousand of them died. Don't do shameful things as they did. Slide45

SECOND READING

9

And don't try to test Christ as some of them did and were later bitten by poisonous snakes.

10Don't even grumble, as some of them did and were killed by the destroying angel.

11These things happened to them as a warning to us. All this was written in the Scriptures to teach us who live in these last days. Slide46

SECOND READING

12

Even if you think you can stand up to temptation, be careful not to fall.

13You are tempted in the same way that everyone else is tempted.

But God can be trusted not to let you be tempted too much, and he will show you how to escape from your temptations. This is the Word of the Lord

C: Thanks be to God.Slide47

47

RESPONSE

C: ♫ Christ humbled himself,

and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross.Slide48

gospel

Luke

13:1-9 CEVRepent or die!

M: The holy gospel is written in chapter 13 of the Gospel according to St Luke, beginning at verse one.

C: ♫ Glory to you, O Lord.

Slide49

gospel

M: About this same time Jesus was told that Pilate had given orders for some people from Galilee to be killed while they were offering sacrifices.  Slide50

gospel

2

Jesus replied:

Do you think that these people were worse sinners than everyone else in Galilee just because of what happened to them?

3Not at all! But you can be sure that if you don't turn back to God, every one of you will also be killed.  Slide51

gospel

4

What about those eighteen people who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them? Do you think they were worse than everyone else in Jerusalem?

5Not at all! But you can be sure that if you don't turn back to God, every one of you will also die. Slide52

gospel

6

Jesus then told them this story:

A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard. One day he went out to pick some figs, but he didn't find any.

7So he said to the gardener, "For three years I have come looking for figs on this tree, and I haven't found any yet. Chop it down! Why should it take up space?”Slide53

gospel

8

The gardener answered, "Master, leave it for another year. I'll dig around it and put some manure on it to make it grow.

9Maybe it will have figs on it next year. If it doesn't, you can have it cut down."

This is the Word of the Lord.C: ♫ Praise to you, O Christ.Slide54

Prayer after the gospel

M: Lord Jesus, thank you for your kindness and patience to us.

Lead us to repent and produce good fruit in our lives.

C: Amen.Slide55

For us* and for our salvation

he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

* This means: us human beings

Hymn

We sing :

Delay not, delay not v. 1,3,5

LHS 304 CAL 293

Thomas Hastings (1784-1872), alt.Slide62

62

Delay not, delay not

1. Delay not, delay not, O sinner, draw near,

The waters of life are now flowing for Thee.

No price is demanded, the Saviour is here;

Redemption is purchased, salvation is free.Slide63

63

Delay not, delay not

3. Delay not, delay not! The Spirit of grace,

Long grieved and resisted, may take His sad flight,

And leave thee in darkness to finish thy race,

To sink in the gloom of eternity’s night.Slide64

64

Delay not, delay not

5. Delay not, delay not! Why longer abuse

The love and compassion of Jesus, thy God?

A fountain is opened; how canst thou refuse

To wash and be cleansed in His pardoning blood?

Slide65

Hymn

We sing as our free will offering is received.

What a friend

LH 426 CAL 293

Joseph

(1820-1886)Slide67

What a friend

1. What a friend we have in Jesus,

All our sins and

griefs

to bear!

What a privilege to carry

Everything to God in prayer!

O what peace we often forfeit,

O what needless pain we bear,

All because we do not carry

Everything to God in prayer.

Slide68

What a friend

2. Have we trials and temptations?

Is there trouble anywhere?

We should never be discouraged;

Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Can we find a friend so faithful,

Who will all our sorrows share?

Jesus knows our every weakness;

Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Slide69

What a friend

3. Are we weak and heavy-laden,

Cumbered with a load of care?

Precious Saviour, still our refuge!

Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Do your friends despise, forsake you?

Take it to the Lord in prayer;

In His arms He’ll take and shield you,

You will find a solace there. †Slide70
