The feeding of the 5,000 forms the background for the teaching on the Lake.
John focused on the lesson the disciples were to learn from the feeding –

Jesus removed His disciples from the crowd who could persuade them to follow their agenda.
The crowd wanted to make Jesus King for the wrong reason.
Jesus did not go along with an agenda that ran contrary to the Father’s plan –
