Analysers On-line nitrate analysers The measuring principle is based on the intense UV absorption of the NO chromophore at 210-220 nm according to the Beer-Lambert law: [C]: concentration of the sample k: extinction coefficient in : intensity of light input sample out : intensity of light output sample Automatic linearization stored in the analyzer is used to compensate the non- linearity of the Beer-Lambert law for high concentrations.The measurement is the weighted sum of the concentrations of NO2 and NO3, although, in most applications, the concentration of NO2 is negligible compared to that of NO3. Turbidity, organic substances, suspended solids or dirt in the measuring cell are compensated for automatically by means of a differential measurement with a second detector at a different wavelength. Analysers On-line ammonium analyser The measuring principle is based on the UV absorption of ammonia in the NH3 gas phase. The addition of a small amount of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to the sample allows the almost complete passage (stripping) of the ammonium ion NH4+ to the NH3 gaseous form. An FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) algorithm is applied to the spectrometer to extract the absorption signal typical of ammonia gas. This method is very selective as no interferent is entrained for determination on surface water or waste water. Turbidity or the colour of the sample do not influence the measurement, as the determination is made on the gas phase. Waste water with suspended solids (active sludge in an oxidation tank) can be determined without prior filtration, thanks to the size of the sample inlet pipe. The automatic washing system ensures continuous system cleaning. The stability of the measurement (unlike the electrode system) eliminates the need for expensive calibration solutions. A zeroing cycle takes place for each determination. Analysers TOC meter Measuring T.O.C. - Total Organic Carbon Measuring principle Flow chart The analyser measures total organic carbon (TOC) using a method which oxidises the aqueous sample in the presence of sodium persulfate and UV irradiation and then measures the carbon dioxide produced using a non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) analyser. The method has been approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and complies with ISO/CEN European guidelines. The analyser is able to take this type of measurement from aqueous samples in a eld that ranges from 0 - 5 mg/l up to a maximum of 10,000 mg/l (others on request). The analyser complies with EPA, DIN, CE, ASTM and NAMUR standards. Analysers Filtration system for analysers The SF-100 ltration system, often used upstream of online analysis systems, is a self-cleaning lter that uses compressed air with a programmable frequency to keep the stainless steel lter element clean. While most of the liquid in analysis passes very quickly passes through the polypropylene body of the lter, only the amount necessary for the analyser is ltered through the stainless steel lter element with a special prole. This prevents a rapid accumulation of dirt and deposits on the lter element. In addition to this, the ltration system uses an electronic timer which periodically, at an interval programmable by the user, opens the NC position on the three-way solenoid valve, allowing the entry of compressed air at a suitable pressure that enables powerful counter-current washing of the lter element. This backwashing proves quite effective in removing solid particles trapped on the outer surface of the lter element. The frequency and duration of the automatic washing cycle can be programmed by the user in a wide range of values.
