Slide9Hoe word
ek
heilig
…?
A
young man comes to
Scetis
, west of the Nile, to seek out the great monk Abba
Macarius
. He asks Abba
Macarius
, "How do I get to be a holy man? I want to be a holy man. And I want to be one tomorrow."
Macarius
smiles and says, "Spend the day tomorrow over at the cemetery. I want you to abuse the dead for all you're worth. Throw sticks and stones at them, curse at them, call them names—anything you can think of. Spend the whole day doing nothing but that."
The young man must have thought the great monk was crazy, but he spent the next day doing everything he was told. When he returned, Abba
Macarius
asked him, "What did the dead people say out there today?"
The young man responded that they didn't say a thing. They were dead.
Macarius
said, "Isn't that interesting? I want you to go back tomorrow, and this time spend the day saying everything nice about these people. Call them righteous men and women, compliment them, say everything wonderful you can imagine
."
Slide10Hoe
word
ek
heilig
…? (

)
So the young man went back the next day, did as he was told, and returned to
Macarius
. The monk asked him what the dead people said this time.
"Well, they didn't answer a word again," replied the brother.
"Ah, they must indeed be holy people," said
Macarius
. "You insulted them, and they did not reply. You praised them, and they did not speak. Go and do likewise, my friend, taking no account of either the scorn of men and women or their praises. And you too will be a holy man."
It's a wonderful story that asks two questions: What do you ignore? The answer is the scorn and praise of others. The other question is more indirect—What do you love? That is, since you are not going to be motivated by what others think, what are you going to give yourself to fully?

23
Slide24Sessie 3 predikantsbediening- rolle en take
Slide25Ministry – the difference between roles and tasks
It is important to distinguish between the roles and tasks of ministryBy tasks we mean the usual pastoral functions we do like preaching, leading worship, saying prayers, teaching, pastoral care, leading small groups, administration, etc (problem: maceration of ministry)By roles we mean the basic and vital intentions behind our ministry. We can say that roles has to do with the why and what questions of ministry and the tasks more with the what and how questions. We will be focussing more on the roles of ministry because we believe that a deep understanding and identification with the roles are even more foundational for our ministry than an effective and smooth fulfilment of the tasks.

Slide42Wat doen profete?
The Gods we do not believe in)The word as informative and transformative (2 Cor 3:18)The transformative word as Zuspruch (gift), Gegenspruch (mirror) and as Anspruch (claim): Gospel, Law, Imperative

Slide48What does priests do?They love and serve people with the love of Christ
Old Testament Moses, also a priest, intercedes for the people (pray) Appointed Priests officiate at temple – organize liturgy and worshipMoses’s priestly attitude – willing to die for his people (also Hosea)New TestamentJesus our High Priest: atone for our sins; forgive, care, heal, intercede with God; ministry of peace and reconciliationNo Priests in NT! Only pastors and shepherds build caring communityIndividual conversations of Jesus and Paul (spiritual care)Stronger emphasis on what is offered through Jesus: forgiveness, renewal, healing, reconciliation, care, peace, growth, development, freedom.
48
Slide49Being a caring priest: practice
Who see people, attend to them, think about them and take them seriously as children of GodWho look at people through the eyes of Jesus and see their potential and gifts (encourage)Who love people with the love coming from Christ and the heart of God (a positive, affirmative attitude)Being present with people…And see and understand their painWho are able to help people grow (courses, groups)Help people fo internalize God’s gifts and to be formed and transformedHelp people to make connections and build relationships Build a caring community (small groups, worship service) – for member and non-members: hospitality

Slide52What do leaders do?
Old TestamentClassical Examples: Patriarchs and Moses: called to acts as a servant and leaders of God’s people. Had this double character from beginningOpting for Kings – against Gods will: want to be like other people, Leadership has to do with strategies and plans and organizing - to “get things done” (dg Moses in Ex 18)Leadership often divided between differing offices and personsNew Testament:Jesus do hand over a kind of leadership to the disciples/apostles; question whether there was a special kind of leadership in the group. Again see the prominence of team leadershipFormation of congregations: election of local leaders also women Also groups of offices: Ephesians, Pastorals, do not use word for leaderPaul: special place? Kind of bishop?… So: Leadership is not about power and control but about taking responsibility to get things done. Calvin; Brueggemann.
52
Slide53Being a worthy leader: practice
Leaders must understand he importance of congregations in the economy of GodCongregational Leaders should also be Social visionaries and be willing to act as civil leaders. They are builders - not only building the congregation but also building a good, caring community. Having a kingdom vision on the community (Calvin)Understand the potential and dynamics of congregations (personal, social, theological)Be willing to take the responsibility of leadership and having the competence to build koinonia (a team!)Dreams must be converted into specific goals, strategies and plansHelp the congregation to discern its calling and help individuals to discover their gifts and vocations And empower (inspire and mobilize) them to take up their vocationsSeeing opening for ministry (both in the congregation and in the community)Learn from the social sciences but also see the patterns in the work of the SpiritLeaders must also learn to work with leaders from other congregations and even community leaders.

Total absence of the term leadership in NT!Reasons? Temptations…..Importance of unselfishness, ability to focus on others (secular research confirms this)Four qualifications:Not lead or rule but serve! NT term is “ministry”Emphasis on “weakness” and dependence (vs worldly images of strength and competency)Primary ministry is not the ministry of the pastor but the ministry of Christ and the ministry of the Congregation!Obedience more important than success

All three roles should potentially be operative in all of our ministry (all tasks)Always be on the lookout for (unexpected) openings for ministryAlways be mindful of both penultimate and ultimate goals of ministryThink about practising the role in the congregation but also outside the congregationLuckily leadership is to be done in a team. How can you get the lay leadership and the congregation to help you with this role? With which of these roles do you need more help than the others?Identify short term growth areas…

Slide72Your understanding of a missional church…
72
Slide73GOCN’s list of twelve characteristics of missional churches
The missional church proclaims the gospel. The missional church is a community where all members are involved in learning to become disciples of Jesus. The Bible is normative in this church's life. The church understands itself as different from the world because of its participation in the life, death, and resurrection of its Lord. The church seeks to discern God's specific missional vocation for the entire community and for all of its members.A missional community is indicated by how Christians behave toward one another. It is a community that practices reconciliation.People within the community hold themselves accountable to one another in love. The church practices hospitality. Worship is the central act by which the community celebrates with joy and thanksgiving both God's presence and God's promised future. This community has a vital public witness. There is a recognition that the church itself is an incomplete expression of the reign of God.
73
Slide74Changing the focus…Ray Anderson – Emerging theology for emerging churches
It is about theology and not geographyIt’s about Christ and not ChristologyIt’s about Spirit and not just SpiritualityIt’s about the right Gospel, not just the right polityIt’s about kingdom living and not kingdom buildingIt’s about the work of God and not just the word of GodIt’s about the law of love and not the letter of the lawIt’s about the community of the Spirit, not just the gifts of the SpiritIt’s about mission and not just ministryIt’s about the church ahead of us and not just the church behind us
74
Slide75Urgent issues for congregations
Identity: it is about the Gospel and the God of Jesus Christ…Mission: what are we now called to do here – in line with Micah 6?Ministry: How are we going to do it?Understanding and living the Gospel (regaining preaching and teaching ministries)With worship and sacraments in the centerLearning to live with hope and faith so that we may be able to love (attention to formation)Helping congregants to discover their ministries
75
Slide76Six disruptive missional practices
Dwelling in the WordDwelling in the WorldAnnouncing the KingdomHospitalitySpiritual discernmentFocus on Missional Action
76
Slide77Dwelling in the Word
We
want the Word to shape our imaginations, intentions, and actions. So we dwell in the Word in pairs and in groups whenever we meet in order to be shaped by God's Word as heard through one another.
Slide78Dwelling in the World
We
want to be alert and observant of the people of peace in the world where God has sent us. So we interact in our wider communities, looking for the people of peace God sends us each week, in order to join community where God is
already
at work.
Slide79Announcing the Kingdom of God
We
want to be Jesus' witnesses, seeing Jesus at work and bearing witness to his presence in the world. So we practice
noticing
Jesus at work in the world and tell stories about it so that when we see the Kingdom of God near us, we can point it out to others.
Slide80Hospitality
We want to create safe space for forming Christian community. So we practice receiving the gracious welcome of people of peace, and we practice giving a gracious welcome to people of peace in order to build bridges within God's mission In and for the world.
Slide81Spiritual Discernment
We
want
to recognize how we've come to where we are and who the Holy Spirit is calling us to be within God's mission. So we dwell in the Word and brainstorm together our past and our present, in order to listen through one another for the Spirit directing us toward God's preferred and promised future for us.
Slide82Focus for Missional Action
We
want to use our time and energy well, not wasting it on too many good things. So we commit to memory our specific missional vocation and use it as a standard in our congregational life together, moving us further into God's mission in the world.

belangrikheid van spanbediening: lidmate saam met predikant as span; gemeentes en leraars werk soos drs
predikante wat samewerkend in styl en buigsaam in uitkyk is:
pastors who can exercise approriate forms of leadership.
Pastors with sense of vocation to leadership, exercising special skills in motivating and encouraging the service of the whole people of God.
People of passion: wil seker wees van ds se roeping

Slide111Senge oor leierskap:
We are coming to believe that leaders are those people who “walk ahead”, people who are genuinely committed to deep change in themselves and in their organizations. The lead through developing new skills, capabilities and understandings. And they come from many places in the organization.

Slide119Hoe word
ek
heilig
…?
A
young man comes to
Scetis
, west of the Nile, to seek out the great monk Abba
Macarius
Call them righteous men and women, compliment them, say everything wonderful you can imagine
."
Slide120Hoe
word
ek
heilig
…? (
verv
)
