The trip from Europe to Asia by land was hard. To get there by sea, ships had to sail all the way around Africa.

Hernando de Soto & Native Americans In 1540 Hernando de Soto and his crew traveled through South Carolina. They came to a town called Cofitachequi. They were greeted by the leader of the town, the Lady of Cofitachequi. She gave de Soto pearls as a welcome gift. Hernando captured the leader. He thought if she were his prisoner, other Native Americans would not attack. He made her guide them through the land. She was able to escape and return later.
