Why this project?Decrease in District WIC case load. 9569 in October 20158597 in October 2016.

Lack of direct referrals to Peer Counselors from the hospital. To improve the Peer Counselors follow up.Athens Regional Medical Center approached us to assist with their breastfeeding support.Slide5

Hospital Breastfeeding Peer CounselorTrained through the WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Program Assist WIC clients and WIC eligible mothers in making WIC appointments

Provide basic breastfeeding education and Support WIC-eligible mothers while at the hospital. Slide6

WIC Outreach WorkerWorks in the hospital for approximately four (4) hours a day, six (6) days a week.Sees all WIC eligible (Medicaid) participants that have delivered.

Discusses the benefits of WIC.Schedules WIC appointments for both established and WIC eligible participants. For WIC eligible participants, a WIC brochure is left with participants, allowing for a subsequent follow-up to gauge interest in scheduling an appointment for themselves and other WIC eligible family members.Slide7

Role ComparisonHospital Breastfeeding Peer Counselor

Focus more on breastfeeding support and less on outreach. Assist hospital staff in providing breastfeeding support to clients.Provides Mother to Mother support.

WIC Outreach WorkerMore WIC outreach work than breastfeeding work. Peer Counselor has dual roles.

Brands WIC as a provider of breastfeeding support not just as a provider of formula. Provides Mother to Mother support.Makes referrals to the WIC clinic Peer Counselors. Slide8

Challenges Getting WIC staff to schedule appointments.Meeting the processing standards.Slide15

What We Have LearnedWe are needed in the hospital. There has been a gap in service between the hospital and the health department. Many Medicaid eligible moms are not on WIC.

WIC is truly beneficial and is needed by many. Many barriers for clients.Staff with good customer service skills make a big difference. Slide16

In SummaryWe are learning new things daily.WIC needs to be in the hospitals.

The Peer Counselors are improving WIC’s brand. The Peer Counselor can play dual roles and be an effective WIC outreach worker. The Project is too new to determine the impact on breastfeeding rates and the Peer Counselor program.

We hope USDA will consider expanding the Loving Support Peer Counselor’s Hospital Job Description. We hope funds can continue to support WIC in the hospital setting. Slide20
