A growing number of non-native speakers are interested in improving their communication skills and SLPs need preparation to work with this clientele. The text provides copious advice and many diverse techniques for teaching accent modification, from the level of basic sounds to the level of discourse. The text emphasizes realistic goal setting, so that clients focus on becoming effective communicators as opposed to sounding exactly like native speakers. The objective is a balance between clear and natural speech. Many SLPs favor intelligibility over naturalness because of their backgrounds working with speech delayed children, but with non-native speakers this often leads to unnatural speech and listeners focus on how something is said as opposed to what is said.Here\'s How to Do Accent Modification is uniquely geared toward the skills and backgrounds of SLPs working with clients in a one-on-one setting, but is also an excellent introductory text for any English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher. Whether you are a beginning or more experienced speech-language pathologist or audiologist, COUNSELING SKILLS FOR SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGISTS AND AUDIOLOGISTS, 2E can equip you with effective counseling skills needed to help your clients cope with the challenges of communication disorders. COUNSELING SKILLS FOR SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGISTS AND AUDIOLOGISTS is the only text available that combines the insights of a well-respected clinical psychologist with the practical knowledge of a recognized speech-language pathologist to highlight the most important basic and advanced counseling skills. Written in user-friendly language, this text places the theories of counseling in real-life contexts that are applicable for today\'s speech-language pathologists and audiologists. Numerous, varied examples drawn directly from the first-hand experiences of the authors help you develop relevant and usable skills. Case studies and proven learning features refine your ability to manage even the most challenging emotions, behaviors, and situations. Written specifically with speech-language pathology assistants (SLPAs) in mind, Speech-Language Pathology Assistants: A Resource Manual, is a practical, easy-to-use manual that can be used by both SLPAs and SLPAs educators. The text defines the roles of SLPAs and their supervisors - offering additional insight into the scope of practice of an SLPA. The Accent Modification Manual helps readers use their cognitive and problem-solving abilities to examine the key elements of the intonation system of American English, how it is organized, and more importantly, how it works in communication. The strategies in this text provide the framework for the life-long process of modifying an accent. This text is an especially creative way of engaging learners in the process, and eliciting ownership of and a commitment to their own personalized improvement plan. Assisting Survivors of Traumatic Brain Injury helps prepare graduate students and practicing speech-language pathologists to serve people with traumatic brain injury (TBI). The book is divided into three sections: Understanding Traumatic Brain Injury, Understanding the Role of Speech-Language Pathologists, and Understanding Reintegration. The first section provides an overview of TBI: definitions, epidemiology, injury severity, and mechanisms of injury. The second section deals with the major disorders associated with TBI for which speech-language pathologists assume diagnostic and intervention responsibility: coma and post-traumatic amnesia, cognitive-communication impairments, motor speech disorders, and swallowing disorders. The final section provides information about integrating survivors of TBI into family, educational, vocational, and community settings. This valuable tool is a must-have for all professionals who work with patients with TBI.
