American renaissance
Slide4Edgar Allan Poe was born in 1809 and died in 1849. he was orphaned at the age of two and then raised by John and Frances Allan. He married his cousin Virginia
Clemm
, much to the dismay of their families, in 1835. he briefly attended the university of Virginia but dropped out due to financial issues.
Some of his other works include well know poems called “The Raven” and “
Ulalume
”. He also wrote many short stories, for example “The Cask of Amontillado”.

It was assumed the the poem “Annabel Lee” was written for Poe's wife who had died two years earlier. However after his death many other women Poe had been with before he died came forward to say that the poem was actually about them.

Poe uses many literary devices in his work. Particularly the use of things like those listed above. He uses imagery to create those mystical landscapes by the sea and personification to bring them to life.

Edgar Allan Poe was a complex man. Towards the end of his life he was a drinker. No one could deny though that he was a genius. He has a great poetic mind that made for some very macabre but inspired pieces. “Annabel Lee” was one of Poe's most well know and greatest pieces. Through the use of real life events, various themes, and literary devices he wrote beautiful, memorable pieces.
