Snowmass white paper
CMS will update the physics reach projection studies done for ESPGCoordinated by Jim Olsen Initial document to be approved by CMS mid-June, final document end of JulyWill include further studies of systematic, statistical and theory limitsPossibly studies with phase 1/phase 2 detectors in final documentWe may also provide information for the instrumentation working group on detectro concepts and technology R&Ds2Slide3
Cost and scope exercise
As discussed last time, we will need to prepare a document for the RRB on scope and cost modeling for phase 2 Baseline scenarios and options (with cost) will come from DESY week along with targeted R&D and studiesPrepare an internal document for July 29 MB/FB and then release to the collaborationProceed with simulation studies: with the goal of preliminary performance results by the ECFA workshop in Oct.Document for the RRB to the MB in Sept.

Preparatory groups are formed with representatives from each experiment, and from CERN theory and accelerator divisions:The groups have two chairs, one from ATLAS and one from CMS plus few identified experts in relevant sub-topics of each area. The chairs will report to the workshop SC The groups will meet to organize the sessions and identify key topics to be addressed (the meetings will be open across groups)Guidelines proposed by the SC will be finalized once groups are formed
A common meeting of the preparatory groups is scheduled on June 10 to report on progress and prepare the workshop agenda
A common document of few pages summarizing the workshop outcome and future steps will be prepared with the chairs of the groups
The discussions within the preparatory groups will be presented at the UPO and in the regular Upgrade meetings (including Projects, WG and Cross-Coordination meetings)
Material for the workshop will be approved in the Upgrade plenary session at the CMS week in

Discussion: Example Questions for TC workshop
We will meet with Austin/Wolfram to discuss the main questions and how to formulate them. List 1: DriversFeasibility of replacing the EB electronics (this one answered)Feasibility of replacing the HE absorber (assume a bolt-on new calorimeter in sections)Feasibility of replacing the HE mega-tiles (implication for EE services…)Feasibility of replacing the CSC FE electronicsFeasibility of replacing the DT ROB/ROSFeasibility of replacing the HF with an endcap plug What are the likely configuration changes in the HF region required by the accelerator/shielding upgradesList 2
Limitations on access for maintenance with sustained running at 5E34 (
eg
. Replacement of inner pixel layers during YETs)
Feasibility
of eta extension (tracking, calorimeter and
muons
)
Feasibility of new tracker services on YB0: power, fibers and cooling
Feasibility of replacing the HF
fibers
Can EE be craned out? Would a replaced HF stay in garage for ever
?List of major TC infrastructure workWhere “Feasibility” includes:
Technical/mechanical considerations
radiation/activation issues (and ability to mitigate)
interference with other work/access and duration of work in shutdown (for example: requires sole control of +end for 8 months)
