Project Summary
Major road
rebuilding
will be conducted by the NC Department of Transportation on a heavily traveled portion of Interstate 40/440 through Wake County coming into downtown Raleigh.
Projected Timeline
: January
2015
- December
2016Slide4

We need your help.
To help reduce congestion, the goal is to get
30,000 cars off the road
during heavy commute times:
Monday - Friday
Morning: 6:00am – 8:30am
Evening: 4:00pm – 6:30pm
We need your help.Slide5

Why Fortify?
30 year-old pavement is cracking & crumbling because of a chemical reaction happening underneath the road, triggered by a substance used in paving several decades ago
Crews must rebuild an 11.5-mile stretch of I-40 and I-440Slide6
6
It
is essentially every road that has an exit on I-40, and any road that feeds into those roads during commuter times. Also roads that have exits on I-440 such as Wade Avenue as we expect a lot of traffic that normally travel along I-40 in the work zone will instead go around it on I-440.
Where Rebuilding Will OccurSlide7
7
Impacted Areas
Areas of traffic congestion or potential congestion will not be confined to the where road rebuilding will occur.
Impacted areas will also include:
Roads with an
exit
onto I-40 and roads
that
feed
into those roads
during commuter
times
R
oads that have exits onto I-440 such as Wade Avenue The expectation is that commuters will attempt to go around the 1-40 work zone by accessing I440 (i.e., the “inner belt line.)Slide8
8
Keep three lanes open in both directions for most of the project – during the entire
I-40 rebuild.
One and a half years of reduced lanes on one of the busiest interstates in NC.
NCDOT to help ease pain. Phase II.Slide9

How State Employees Can Help
As a major employer in the area, state government agencies will be impacted by the road
rebuilding.
We can do our part by considering the following
:
Alternative work schedules
Teleworking
Be mindful of meeting and event start and stop times
Using webinars or teleconferences for virtual meetings
Encourage the use of public transportation and ride sharing
Over 25,000 state employees work in Wake County and live in Wake or Johnston CountySlide10
10
Alternative Work Schedules
Examples
:
For an office-based employee who typically
works
8 hours per day Monday through
Friday, consider:
N
on-traditional
start and end times, such as:
6:30 am – 3:00 pm (w/30 minute lunch break)
10:00 am - 6:30 pm (w/30 minute lunch break
) Start and end times individualized by day:6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Wednesday (w/30 minute lunch break) and 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday (w/30 minute lunch break) Schedule longer work days with shorter work weeks Four 10-hour days (not including lunch break) and having three days off Four 9-hour days and one 4 hour day (not including lunch break)Slide11
11
Working Remotely from Home
(Telework)
Working from home occasionally may
be
an option for some workers within
some
agencies, however
:
Employees exempt from overtime pay may work
from
home one or more days per week.
Employees eligible for overtime
pay usually do not work from home.Consider how work productivity will be measured.Consider the home work environment; is it conducive to working at home?Slide12
