Clean CoalSlide2

What is “Clean Coal”?

It is not clean what so ever

Out of all fossil fuels it is the dirtiest

Pollution to our water and air

If you thought coal was on its way out, think againSlide3

Can we make Coal Better?

Coal can never truly be clean, but can it be clean enough for us

A single plant burns 1.4 Tons of coal each year

The Department of Energy has R&D on clean coal

Advanced power generation and carbon capture are part of the list of technology being perfectedSlide4

Economics of Clean Coal

King Coal

“Are Clean Coal Technologies an economically efficient means of Carbon Emissions reduction?”ExxonMobil

CCS, the possible solution to a huge problem.Coal Plants with CCS

Down sides of CC useSlide5
Slide6

Social Aspect of “Clean Coal”

The new problem is that the U.S, has too much energy, not too little

We have coal, natural gas, and oil reserves that could last hundreds of years at modest cost

This is thanks to new extraction technologies such as fracking, with horizontal drillingAmerica would seem to need a new national energy policy to face the risk of increased concentrations of carbon dioxide in the air bringing global environment change

President Obama has taken a handful of steps but still nothing has been done with limiting environmental harmSlide7

Political Perspectives on Clean Coal

Democrats:

Coal & our environment is a priority

Transition to wind, solar, and natural gas energyDecline in coal production

Hillary Clinton’s take:

“We can be the 21st century clean energy superpower.” --2nd Debate

Creating jobs based on clean and renewable

energy.

Republicans:

Money required to switch to nonrenewable sources of energy

Low price of coal--abundant

“Donald Trump Digs Coal”

Economy

Jobs

2nd debate

“The EPA is putting these energy companies out of business.”

Is it worth switching to other sources of energy?

“There is a thing called clean coal.”Slide8

Politics are complicated… so is the topic of clean coal.Slide9

The Science of “Clean Coal”

Traditional power plants only use ⅓ of the energy available from standard coal, but gasified coal uses 50% or more of the total energy

Uses less coalProduces gasses that can be utilized in other means such as sulfur and hydrogenSlide10

International Politics

Many countries have decided to phase out coal fired power plants

Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Finland

Russian State power company Inter-Rao has shown interest in clean coal, but the government has not shown major interestSlide11

International Politics

While it is being phased out in many parts of the world, coal production is being increased in many parts of asia

33% increase by 2040China is currently the world’s leading producer of coalSlide12

Conclusion

Clean Coal can never truly be clean, but…

Politics are complicated, and “clean coal” is even more complicated…Same conclusions for social aspects-- torn perspectivesSlide13
