Spiral of Silence Theory

A person is less likely to let their voice be heard if it is not that of the dominant public opinion (Anderson, 1996).

EXAMPLE

Although Christopher Columbus knew the world was round, it was not the popular view at the time, and (for a while) suppressed Columbus’ statements – rendering him “silent”.Slide3

Uses and gratification theory

People use the media for varying reasons, whether it be

i

nformation, entertainment, etc. It assumes that people

a

re not passive with media but rather they integrate it to

t

heir own lives the way they wish (Katz, 1987

). They seek to

g

ratify a need.

EXAMPLE

Some people watch the news to stay informed but many

e

njoy it for entertainment purposes (Jon Stewart Show)

because they choose to be entertained rather than informed.Slide4
