Benefits of Herbs

www.smithspirations.com

Whole

herbs and herbal preparations (think

salves

teas

tinctures

, and the like)

contain many active compounds to meet numerous needs.

They are highly complex substances that can be used by the body for various healing purposes.

Whole

herbs can be prepared in all sorts of creative ways.

They can be added to kitchen recipes, made into drinks, mixed with honey, steeped in vinegars, extracted in alcohols, and more.

The

internal use of herbs and herbal formulas is well-established in tradition and in research.

While there are herbs that aren’t safe to take internally (arnica is an example, unless it is homeopathic), those are few in comparison to the hundreds of plants that can safely be taken internally and in therapeutic doses with no worry about damaging sensitive internal tissue.Slide10

Downside of Herbswww.smithspirations.com

There is typically prep work needed in order to put herbs to use, especially medicinally.

Echinacea

is

a great herb to use in times of sickness, but just eating the dried or fresh plant isn’t very effective. It’s often taken as a tincture which means you either have to

make one

 or

buy one

.

Herbs can take up quite a bit of cabinet space.

To meet the many health needs of a family, you’ll likely require a thorough herb collection with many jars of herbs.

Tincturing some of those herbs helps conserve space, but as I just mentioned, it also takes time

.

Some herbs and herbal preparations just don’t taste great, especially for kids.

It can be tricky to get your kids to take herbal preparations. I have them drink the shot of tincture followed by juice.Slide11

Benefits of Essential Oilswww.smithspirations.com

Essential oils are ready-to-go products that usually only require some dilution before

using.

An

expansive essential oil collection can be stored in a relatively small space.

Essential oils can be used topically, diffused, inhaled, in rubs, soaks, salves, lotions, etc.

Essential

oils are able to work through our sense of smell which has an incredibly unique ability to influence our brains in ways that other senses can’t.

You

DO NOT take Essential Oils internally

so no need to fight with children to take them.Slide12

Downside of Essential Oilswww.smithspirations.com

Essential oils typically require more care, especially around children, pregnant women, the elderly, and pets.

Essential oils are extremely POTENT. You need to know what you’re doing and take care to prevent injury. (Oils can burn if not diluted. Can cause premature labor in pregnant women among other things.)

Essential

oils aren’t effective in all situations.

Not every ailment can be effectively treated at home with volatile oils from plants. Some situations are best served with other active plant compounds that are absent in essential oils.Slide13

Line Upon Line

Just like when you starting learning about Preparedness, You found something that interested you and then you added upon it. You found more interests and kept going.

It is the same when learning about Herbs and

Essental

Oils.

Start with one Herb/Oil and go from there.Slide14

Ways to Use Herbs at Home

Herbal Teas

Herbal Poultice or Compress

-

A homemade poultice is made by mashing herbs, plant material or another substance with warm water or natural oils to make a paste. The paste can be applied directly to the skin and covered with a piece of clean cloth

.

Infusion or Decoction

-

Teas and infusions are made using soft herbs (flowers, stems, leaves) by pouring water over herbs and allowing the herbs to steep for a certain period of time. Decoctions are made by simmering harder herbs (roots, nuts, seeds, barks) over low heat for a set amount of

time

Syrup

- To

make the syrup you’ll start out making a decoction and then add in your

sweetener. Medicinal

syrups are shelf stable and last longer

than

infusions or

decoctions.

Tincture

A homemade extract using alcohol, glycerin, or vinegar to draw the medicinal properties out of the herb.

Salves, balms, lotions, creams -

I

nfusing

your oil with the herbs of your choice

.

Herbal Steams

-

Add herbs to a pot of water and allow to lightly simmer.Slide15

How to use Essential Oils

Applied directly to the skin

Neat

(without diluting). Only apply Neat in special circumstances and with oils that are safe to apply Neat.

Dilute

with a carrier oil and

massage

onto an area like the soles of your feet, back, stomach, chest, throat, etc. The soles of your feet have the biggest pores in your body. Your body and the oils work together to “carry” the oils to where you need them most.

Bath

Soak (can mix with bath salts), Foot Soak too!

Personal Care

Add to homemade personal care products (deodorant, lotion, hair care, toothpaste, other oral care products, etc.)

Perfume

Diffuse

Compress

DisinfectSlide16

Lavender

Lavender is a universal oil that has been shown to balance the body and to work wherever there is a need. It is called 'the grandmother' of essential oils because it cares for and nurtures us through such a variety of physical and emotional stresses. If you don't know what essential oil to reach for, try lavender

.

EMOTIONAL

/ SPIRITUAL / MENTAL ASPECTS:

One of the great emotional gifts of lavender is the feeling of total and unchanging support around us. It leaves us with no room for doubt that we are loved and will be supported in life's challenges and in the process of healing. Lavender promotes faith, even in the hard times. Lavender brings balance between masculine and feminine energy and traits.

Lavender is a gentle, but effective, sedative and nervine. It can bring relief from anxiety, panic, hysteria, emotional and mental fatigue, headaches and migraines, and insomnia.

PHYSICAL ASPECTS:

Lavender can be used for nearly all skin conditions. It can be applied to cuts, sunburns, burns, rashes, dermatitis, eczema, and insect bites. Consistent use of lavender with burns and injuries minimizes scarring. Lavender, usually as part of a blend, is often used to prevent or remedy conditions of dandruff and hair loss. Lavender is antiseptic, anti-inflammatory,

cytophylactic

, and antispasmodic, making it effective for muscle strains and sprains, cramps, and wound healing.

Lavender clears excess waste products from the lymphatic system and is an aid to digestion. Lavender is sometimes all that is needed to prevent or alleviate nausea. Mildly diuretic, lavender can be useful in alleviating edema and premenstrual water retention. Whether the root of the problem is emotional or physical, lavender is often effective in stabilizing both high and low blood pressure and regulating the pulse. Lavender, or blends containing it, is used to lessen pain and promote restful sleep. Lavender is useful for babies with thrush.

CAUTIONS:

Lavender is wonderfully calming in small amounts, but can be stimulating if used in too large a quantity or too often. This is especially true with babies and small children.Slide17

Breezey

INGREDIENTS

basil, birch, eucalyptus, lemon, peppermint,

ravensara

AFFINITY FOR:

respiratory system, immune system, skin, muscles

APPLICATION

Le

Breezey

should be diluted and rubbed on the chest or back. It can also be diffused or placed on your pillow at night.

AROMATIC CONSIDERATIONS:

Le

Breezey

opens bronchial and sinus passages very effectively and has been successful in alleviating snoring.

EMOTIONAL / SPIRITUAL / MENTAL ASPECTS:

While generally thought of as an oil for physical illness, the aroma of

Le

Breezey

lifts the spirits and brings a sense of confidence and self-worth.

PHYSICAL ASPECTS:

Le

Breezey

, besides being very effective in times of illness, is an excellent respiratory tonic and immune stimulant. The inclusion of

ravensara

oil creates viral fighting and tissue rebuilding properties, especially for the lung and bronchial tissues. This blend should also be tried for colds, asthma, allergies, sinus congestion, and flu.

Le

Breezey

makes an excellent muscle relaxant and pain reliever when you do not have

Le

WarmDown

or

Le

Deeper

handy and you have strained a muscle.Slide18

InsideOut

INGREDIENTS:

anise, cardamom, cilantro, fennel, juniper berry,

kanuka

, lemon, lemongrass, patchouli, peppermint, tarragon, thyme

AFFINITY FOR:

digestive system, stomach

meridian

APPLICATION:

Apply one drop behind the ears for nausea, motion sickness, or morning sickness.

Le

InsideOut

can also be applied over the abdomen either by diluting with a carrier oil or as a compress.

EMOTIONAL / SPIRITUAL / MENTAL ASPECTS:

Le

InsideOut

is primarily considered an oil which works on the physical body. Whenever you use an essential oil, you will be working on underlying emotional roots as well as physical complaints.

Le

InsideOut

can be helpful in discovering and sorting through the emotions underlying the digestive problems.

Le

InsideOut

can help calm the obsessive worry that sometimes contributes to digestive difficulties.

PHYSICAL ASPECTS:

Le

InsideOut

improves the function of the digestive system. It helps with upset stomach, belching, bloating, stomach cramps, heartburn, constipation, and diarrhea.

Le

InsideOut's

ability to be effective for both constipation and diarrhea may seem odd; it is not. Natural remedies work with the body to return systems to balanced and healthy states. They are not the administration of an "opposing" remedy or force. This is true in every aspect of the body and mind when working with natural healers.

Le

InsideOut

should be used for any bout of intestinal flu or food poisoning. It is useful for most types of nausea, either by inhaling the aroma or putting a drop behind each ear. This blend should be applied over the abdomen for colon problems and for candida overgrowth.

Le

InsideOut

has been useful in the treatment of parasites in animals and humans. For humans, place

Le

InsideOut

on the feet and massage across abdomen. For animals, dilute a few drops in water and massage into soft tissues.

Cautions:

Le

InsideOut

contains a small amount of fennel which is, when used by itself, contra-indicated for use during pregnancy. This is an example of blended oils being safer to use than single essential oils. This essential oil blend is safe to use for morning sickness in the manner described, but proper care, prudence, and judgement should be exercised.Slide19

Millenia

"Chiropractor in a bottle"

is a good description of this blend except that

Le

Millenia

aligns so much more than just physical structures.

Le

Millenia

aligns the electrical energies of the body, balances every meridian, and energizes every chakra. In addition,

Le

Millenia

maintains the integrity of the connective tissues that wrap, connect, and protect every organ and balances the emotions connected to each organ.

Le

Millenia

balances the moisture and fluid levels in the body.

One of my favorite uses for

Le

Millenia

is in working with

ADHD

and

hyperactivity

. Applying

Le

Millenia

to the feet at least once a day can make a profound difference in a

childs

ability to sit still and concentrate. I use the feet because it is an excellent place to draw essential oils into the body. I also like the feet because the person (it is often a little boy) can put his shoes back on, go to school, and no one teases him because he "smells like flowers

."

As an agent of structural alignment,

Le

Millenia

can be used as a

diuretic, an antispasmodic, an expectorant, and a nervine

Le

Millenia

is helpful for some types of arthritis, for sciatica, and to improve capillary circulation.

Le

Millenia

should be tried at the very first moment a hernia is suspected.

Using

Le

Millenia

to brush your teeth may keep your teeth aligned and

prevent cavities

. A drop should be diluted in almond oil and put in the ear for

earache

. This will realign physical structures and take the pressure off of the ear canal or ear drum.

Because

Le

Millenia

realigns physical and electrical structures, it is beneficial for some types of

headaches

. It is

antispasmodic

,

analgesic

, and excellent where

bruisin

g has occurred.Slide20

Lobelia

Indicated

for:

bronchitis

, whooping cough, congestion, asthma, tobacco withdrawal, allergies, colds, soother for inflamed conditions, pain reliever in elevated amounts and as a sedative.

Properties:

expectorant

, emetic, anti-asthmatic, stimulant antispasmodic, diaphoretic, diuretic, nervineSlide21

Plantain

Plantains have wide-ranging

antimicrobial

properties besides being

anti-inflammatory

and

analgesic

. It can not only

soothe insect bites and superficial wounds but prevent infections and accelerate healing

.

Plantains

also have an

astringent

property that has a cleansing effect on the body. It helps dry up excess secretions in the respiratory tract and the digestive system, thus being useful in

treating colds and diarrhea

. The astringency is moderated by the demulcent effect of the mucilage in the herb, so this herbal remedy is much gentler than other commonly used astringents.

The

edible leaves

of broadleaf plantain are rich in calcium and other minerals and vitamins, including Vitamin K. This vitamin helps stem bleeding from cuts and wounds. Tender leaves can be eaten fresh in salads, but older leaves have to be cooked.  Slide22

Yarrow

It is helpful in relieving fevers, shortening the duration of cold and flu, helping improve relaxation during illness, and relieving cramps associated with hormones or illness. Applied topically, it is helpful with skin itching, rash or other issues.

An external tincture or poultice will often help with hemorrhoids, rashes and broken skin. Some people will notice relief from allergy symptoms by drinking a tea of

yarrow

 and

mint

.Slide23

Echinacea

Combats Cancer

Boosts the Immune System

Alleviates Pain

Functions as a Laxative

Anti-inflammatory

Improves skin problems

Helps improve mental health

Relieves upper respiratory issues
