I am Invisible, understand, simply because people refuse to see me.

In the Prologue, IM encounters another man and this man does not see him not because he truly is invisible but because he refuses to see someone of a lower stature than that of his.Slide3

During the Battle Royal, vision played a major role due to the fact that they were all blind folded and expected to fight their way out. They were expected to fight blindly through a difficult struggle such as the Battle Royal.

Then I became aware of the clarinet playing and the big shots yelling at us. Some threatened us if we looked and others if we did not.Slide4

“You weren’t being smart, were you, boy?” he said, not unkindly. “No, sir!” “You sure that bit about ‘equality’ was a mistake?”

Even the quotes on race contribute to the theme of blindness. When the white man says this to IM he shows that racism is still blind and it causes others around to see the same way as this man does.Slide5

I am not complaining, nor am I protesting either. It is sometimes the advantageous to be unseen, although it is most often rather wearing on the nerves.

IM in this quote explains the advantages of being invisible. But he acknowledges the fact that being invisible is very frustrating because he cannot be seen not just by certain people but he cannot be seen by all.
