There are four native species of ‘Iliahi in Hawai‘i. One species is found in coastal sites and the others grow in dry or wet forests or shrublands. All native plants or animals arrived in Hawai‘i without any human help. Fruits or seeds can be transported long distances by winds, water (floating), or if they are carried internally or externally by birds.

This Lua Moku ‘Iliahi is on Moloka‘i. It was used in the 1800’s to estimate the quantity of ‘iliahi wood that would fit in the boats used to export ‘Iliahi . This pit is 75` long, which is same length as the boat hull.
