MISSION OF THE OFFICE OF ACADEMIC AFFILIATIONS 1 Statutory mission of VAVA Policy Memo #2 – 70th anniversaryTo Educate for VA and for the NationSocial workers and psychologists began in 1940s, in addition to medical residents Incredibly important recruitment toolDirect appointment authorityCreating the clinical workforce for VA and the country Many will go away and then come back to VA in the futureOur major succession planning activityOAA: Stipends, oversight, policy, coordination

AHE PORTFOLIO“Associated Health” includes all clinical health professions with the exception of Medicine, Dentistry, and NursingOther OAA sections: Graduate Medical/Dental Education, Nursing Education, and Advanced Fellowships (poly trauma)Over 40 Associated Health professions train in VAFor all clinical trainees, approximately 120,000 rotate through VA annuallyApproximately 25,000 are AHE trainees ~85% are without compensation (WOC)17 funded disciplinesAY 18 – just over 4,900 stipends $139 million 4

VISION: INTERPROFESSIONAL TRAINING Training that goes beyond a simple multidisciplinary teamMembers of multiple professions and trainees share responsibilities Shared curriculum, didactics, projects, and collaborative assessment and careTrainees learn about the unique contributions of their discipline, the disciplines of fellow trainees, and how to communicate effectively to provide team-based careGoals: Understand and appreciate own and other’s professional perspective and how to work together in a complementary way to assist Veterans in managing their health 4
