Careless use and disposal of smoking materials is consistently one of the leading causes of fires in the City of Hamilton. Every year, thousands of dollars in damage, many injuries and even deaths occur because people do not follow some basic fire safety rules. Hamilton Emergency Services asks that if you choose to smoke, do so in a manner that will not place your family and possessions at risk from fire. GENERAL SAFETY ADVICE Cigarettes can cause a fire that may smoulder for hours before it produces flames. For this reason it is very important that you use every safety

precaution available to ensure the safety of you and your family. Never smoke when you feel tired or drowsy Never smoke in bed Do not allow ashtrays to be filled to the point where they are overflowing For any emergency In Hamilton dial 911 Keep matches and lighters in a secure place out of reach of children If possible restrict smoking to outdoor locations

ashtrays away from combustible materials SAFE DISPOSAL Do not place ashtray contents directly into the garbage Fully wet ashes before disposing of them, or Wet down ashes and leave overnight before disposing CONDUCT A SURVEY Check all areas where people have been smoking, including under and around chairs and couches Check under all seat cushions for cigarettes that may have fallen there Make sure that all ashes have been disposed of in a safe manner MATCHES & LIGHTERS Never leave matches and lighters in a place where children can easily get them.
