Quote Sandwiches

Three easy steps to make your essays MUCH better:

Introduce the quote (this is new!)

Include the quote (just write the section you want!)

Comment on the quote (1-2 sentences. We’ve practiced this!)Slide4

Step 1: INTRODUCING QUOTES

Some common ways to do so:

In

Kite Runner,

when [event] happens, [character] says, “…”

When [event] occurs, [Character] feels that, “…”

Use the author’s words to complete your own sentence: (Good for descriptions):

When Amir arrives back in Kabul, he sees his favorite restaurant still standing, but “its doors were padlocked, the windows shattered, and the letters K and R missing from its name.”Slide5

Step 3: COMMENT STARTERS

This quote shows that….

From [character’s] words, the reader discovers….

This scene is important because…Slide6

Why is this not a sandwiched quote?

When Amir returns to Afghanistan, it is in shambles. He sees many terrible, shocking sights that make his beloved city almost unrecognizable. “I saw a dead body near the restaurant.” Slide7

Why is this a poor example of a sandwich paragraph?

When Amir returns to Afghanistan, it is in shambles. “I saw a dead body near the restaurant.” Amir becomes even more upset when he sees that his own old home, in the Wazier Akbar Khan district, is still in fair condition, but only because the Taliban now lives there.Slide8

Why is this a better example?

When Amir returns to Afghanistan, it is in shambles. He sees many terrible, shocking sights that make his beloved city almost unrecognizable. For example, within his first few minutes in the city, he says that ,“I saw a dead body near the restaurant.” This dead body on the streets shows how far Kabul has fallen since Amir left. The restaurant used to be a place where people could gather to enjoy each others’ company, but now it is just another place of death in Kabul.

Now, make your own sandwich!

Return to the ‘Save the Last Word’ journal entry

Pick ONE quote you wrote that day

In today’s journal entry, turn that quote into a sandwich mini-paragraph with the three parts we discussed today:

Introduction/Context

The quote

Commentary that explains the quote’s significanceSlide10

The Hero’s Journey

-Recurring pattern in stories

-Made famous by Joseph Campbell

Three Main Elements:

The Departure

The Initiation (all the tough stuff!)

The ReturnSlide11

In pop culture

In your small groups:

Agree on a story/movie to analyze

Lion King Toy Story Star Wars Lord of the Rings Finding Nemo Harry Potter Shrek

2. Determine WHO the “hero” is

3. Determine the SPECIFIC plot events that match up with our three stages (departure, initiation, return)Slide12

To complicate matters…Slide13

Ordinary World

Call to Change

Refusal of the Call

Meeting the Mentor

Crossing the Line

Allies, Enemies, and Trials

Facing the Darkness

The Journey

A New Perspective

The ReturnSlide14

The Hero’s Journey in Kite Runner

In your small groups:

Determine the SPECIFIC plots events in

Kite Runner

for your assigned part of the hero’s journey

Write the event(s) in your group’s spot on the board AND an illustration

Pick roles

Introducer of names

Explain topic

Explain KR events

Explain illustrationSlide15

Reflection

Why is the sandwich method of using quotes helpful? Do you already use it (or parts of it)?

How does the concept of the hero’s journey deepen your understanding of

Kite Runner?
