Let’s look at hooks

Just like a fisherman uses a hook to catch a fish, a writer uses a hook to grab a reader. The hook is the first line of your essay or story. It is what catches the attention of the reader and makes them want to read more! Just like a fish on a hook, the reader is reeled in by your interesting hook.

Which grabs your attention?

The girl danced in front of the mirror.

The young girl, dressed in a long red dress and sparkling high heeled shoes, twirled like a ballerina in front of her mirror. As the hungry bear lunged for the fish in the mountain stream, he slipped on the slimy moss and went tumbling down the rapids. The bear jumped at a fish and fell in the water. Slide9

Now its your turn

You all have a sheet of “hooks”. Talk to those at your table and decide which are the best hooks. Circle the ones you think would

grab your attention and make you want to keep reading. Then come up with a hook of your own to replace one on the sheet that needs work. We are going to take about 5 minutes for this then share as a group.
