Alcohol,its source and its consequences

InvestigationWe all know about alcohol, mainly because the effect it can have on our bodies when we consume too much. But not many people know where it comes from and why it has the effect it has on us. So now I'm going to investigate it. :)Slide3
Its sourceEthanol is made by the process of fermentation.Fermentation is the process where yeast breaks down sugar into alcohol and carbon dioxide. Yeast is a living thing that contains special enzymes responsible for this reaction.Slide4
MY EXPEREMENT I decided to prove this theory at home using basic equipment and ingredients.Slide5
Firstly I put hot tap water into a bowl and mixed till dissolved and did the same thing with the yeast after.
I then put it into the oven and heated it to 30°C because the yeast requires a certain temperature to function properly.Slide6
After 4 hours in the oven bubbles started to form which indicated fermentation had begun.I then sealed it to stop the yeast from multiplying and allow it produce alcohol aswell as CO

After another few hours in the oven the clingfilm had risen because of all the CO2 it had produced. Then we took it out and lit a match under the clingfilm and it went out, you could really get the smell of alcohol aswell.
This shows us that the process of fermentation does produce alcohol.Slide8
Its ConsequencesIts hard to believe that such ingredients like yeast and sugar can produce something that can really effect our bodies. But when over consumed, alcohol can damage lots of parts of the body. It interferes with communications between nerve cells and all other cells leading to sluggishness. It gets absorbed into the bloodstream which sends it to all parts of the body and will increase bloodflow leading to vomiting, loss of heat, sweating, damages muscle fibres and gives rise to liver problems.
