Climactic Paragraph Think of this type of paragraph as a stairway: it begins with the least important aspect of the subject – the bottom of the steps – and builds to the most important one. The writer must give his/her reader a clear path from the bottom to the top, while not losing any points in the middle! The key to writing a good climactic paragraph is using transition words. These will logically connect the different steps of the paragraph using words such as initially, even more important , most significantly , etc. Also, a writer must devote the most space to his/her most important idea or point . Don’t skimp on your explanations here or your reader won’t believe that your most important point is really the most important point. Here’s an e xample – Every once in a while a day will go so poorly that you might think it was a waste of time to even get out of bed. One lousy event precedes another until you have to just throw up your hands and exclaim, “tomorrow has to be better than today!” W ell, just such a day happened to me last week, and it all started with the loss of my toothbrush. This by itself would have been no big deal because we always have spare toothbrushes in the cabinet, but it was followed by burnt eggs for breakfast and an e mpty milk carton , which were significant because I had to dash out the door to work without a satisfying breakfast. Once I was at work, though, life really began to get dicey. Our copy machine was being repaired so I had to spend precious minutes in line for the one across the hallway, while my boss paced the floor waiting for my report. The most significant event, though, happened at the end of the day just as I was getting ready to leave for home. Dashing for the elevator, I turned a corner too quickl y and rammed right into the copy machine repairman with all of his tools, sending both of us careening to the floor. His nose is broken, my wrist is sprained, and I came within inches of getting fired for my recklessness and poor behavior. I’m going to b ed now, hoping to wake up to a totally different life tomorrow.
