One habitat under threat is Coral Reefs. These beautiful habitats face many threats.
Coral reefs are mostly at threat as a result of human activities. The main threat is the deposition of eroded soil that is caused by deforestation, construction, agriculture, mining, dredging, poor land management & coastal population growth. This smothers coral polyps and blocks sunlight. Other threats include pollution, sewerage, oil spills, tourism and mining of coral limestone for building.
Scientists estimate that humans have caused the death of
10%
of the worlds coral reefs. Another
60%
are threatened or in critical condition.

In some countries up to 80% of original mangrove areas is believed to be lost. More extensive losses have occurred in the last 50 years. Indeed the Mediterranean today is still threatened by regular oil spills and untreated sewerage from a number of countries including Greece. A failure to protect our coasts will not only result in a loss of marine biodiversity, but will also harm our fishing industries.Slide8
