RBSPICE Van Allen Probes Mission Overarching Science Questions: Which physical processes produce radiation belt enhancement events? What are the dominant mechanisms for relativistic electron loss? How do ring current and other geomagnetic processes affect radiation belt behavior?RBSPICE makes key contributions to these science questions by determining: how space weather creates the storm-time ring current around Earth, andhow that ring current supplies and supports the creation of the radiation belt populations Van Allen Probes SWG, San Antonio 23 September 2014
RBSPICE Status RBSPICE A and B: Energy system on both continues nominal operation. RBSPICE-A: Operating at HV=198. Perigee safing window: 3 hours 20 minutes total (1 hour 20 minutes pre-perigee; 2 hours post-perigee). Telemetry products configured for energy science during perigee safing window; full science elsewhere. RBSPICE-A HV configured for alternate orbits on. RBSPICE-B: Operating at HV=204. Perigee safing window: 1 hour 50 minutes total (55 minutes pre-perigee; 55 minutes post-perigee). Telemetry products are configured for energy science during perigee safing window; full science elsewhere. RBSPICE Reconfigurations for Extended MissionBased on result to date: Hot ion He abundances in both quiet and disturbed conditions extend to higher energies than believed previously. Significant implications for plasma physics of ring current. Reconfigure RBSPICE He channels to extend to 1 MeV (from 500 keV)Faster timing needed for studies of injections and substorm processes in ring current, and in studies of ULF wave and particle processes. Reconfiguration using new data allocations: RBSPICE A in <2-spin> mode; RBSPICE B in highest time resolution mode (no spin average)
