The Conquest Continues Joshua is DEAD ( 1.1) The question is who will go and FIGHT against the Canaanites? LORD: “Judah shall go – I have given them the LAND” Judah and Simeon form a PARTNERSHIP Judah wages war against the Canaanites and Perizzites at Bezek

Adonai- bezek was captured and had his thumbs cut off along with his big toes. Why? “As I have done, so God has REPAID me ” Adonai had inflicted the same punishment on 70 other kings

The Conquest Continues Jerusalem is captured and burned (1.8) The war continues along the following… Hill Country, the Negev, and the lowland Hebron and the Canaanites living there Inhabitants of Debir (1.11) Caleb makes a VOW (1:12) Whoever attacks Kiriathsepher and captures it will receive his daughter as a wife

Othniel Caleb’s Younger Brother He accepts Caleb’s challenge and attacks Kiriathsepher He receives as reward his niece, Achsah , as his bride Achsah is very SMART , she asks her father for a blessing of land.

Caleb grant s his daughter her blessing by rewarding her with upper and lower springs of the Negev 1:14 - 15

Judah Returns the Favor 1:17 - 19 Judah went with his brother Simeon and they defeated the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath (“watchtower”) They also captured the following territories Gaz Ashkelon Ekron The LORD was with JUDAH and he took possession of the Hill Country

Joseph Gets Into the Mix 1:22 – 25 The house of Joseph ATTACKS Bethel as the LORD is with HIM “Bethel” – house of God; was strategically located 12 mi North of Jerusalem at the border between Benjamin and Ephraim. The spies of Joseph make a pact with a man who provides intel in exchange for his life and freedom.

Failure to Complete the Conquest This next section (1:27 – 36) lists multiple FAILURES in the conquest Archaeology has confirmed the persistent presence of Canaanites in many of these places. The Israelites permitted them to LIVE in their land either as slaves, servants, or worse free men. In fact, the tribe of Dan, loses their entire tribal allotment

Failure to Complete the Conquest Manasseh, Ephraim, Zebulun, Asher, and Naphtali all left pockets of Canaanites living in their regions. Most were put into “forced labor” as Israel grew stronger (1:28, 30, 33) The Amorites actually defeated the tribe of Dan but were later put into forced labor by the house of Joseph (34 – 36)

Dan received an allotment along the coastal plain west of Judah but never gains control of its land. Being driven out by the Amorites, Dan faced additional resistance from the Philistines along the coast. In chapter 18 we will see Dan relocate to the far North

Israel’s Disobedience Yahweh’s Proclamation and Stipulations : I delivered you from slavery in Egypt I made you into a great nation in the Promised Land I will never break my covenant with YOU! You shall not make a covenant with anyone else You shall break down their altars

Israel’s Disobedience Yahweh’s Response to Israel’s actions : But you have not OBEYED my VOICE I will not drive them out before you They will become THORNS in your side Their GODS shall be a SNARE to you

When they heard this, the people lifted up their voice and wept…and they sacrificed to the LORD ( 2:4-5)

Response to Joshua’ Death 2.6-10 The people took possession of the LAND All the people SERVED the LORD during Joshua’s life and the elders who had seen a great work of God Joshua died when he was 110 and he was buried in the hill country of Ephraim. After Joshua’s death another GENERATION arose who didn’t KNOW the LORD and what he had done for ISRAEL.

ISRAEL’S UNFAITHFULLNESS 11  And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the  Lord  and served the Baals. 12  And they abandoned the  Lord , the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. They went after other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed down to them. And they provoked the  Lord   to anger

13   They abandoned the  Lord  and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth .  14  So the anger of the  Lord  was kindled against Israel, and he gave them over to plunderers, who plundered them. And he sold them into the hand of their surrounding enemies, so that they could no longer withstand their enemies.  15  Whenever they marched out, the hand of the  Lord  was against them for harm, as the  Lord  had warned, and as the  Lord  had sworn to them. And they were in terrible distress.

Israel’s Greatest Problem - IDOLATRY

Israel’s Greatest Problem - IDOLATRY “whore after other gods” (v. 17) and “bowed down” to them. Faith in God is never mere intellectual agreement to doctrinal statements; it always involves trust and a living relationship. Unbelief is unfaithfulness to God and abandonment of His faithful promises. Devotion to idolatry is described as “prostitution” to false “gods” – HOSEA and Gomer

The LORD Raises Up Judges They saved them out of the hand of those who “plundered” them (v. 16) The LORD was with the Judge (v. 17) The LORD was moved to pity/compassion by their groaning because of those who afflicted and oppressed them. This is the same motivating factor that Jesus has for as a shepherd to his sheep

The Dreaded Cycle Whenever the judge died, they turned back to their evil ways and were more corrupt (2:19) So God was angry and he didn’t grant Israel victory over the other nations. He did this to ultimately TEST Israel to see in the face of adversity if they would walk in the way of the LORD. (2.22)
