Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)

Def: made up of all those nerves that lie outside the brain and spinal cord.

Nerves are bundles of axons that are routed together in the PNS

Divided into the Somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system

Slide3

Somatic Nervous System

Def: made up of nerves that connect to voluntary skeletal muscles and to sensory receptors

Carry information from receptors in the skin, muscles and joints to the CNS and carry commands from the CNS to the muscles.

Control voluntary behaviors

All afferent neurons are sensory

All efferent neurons exten

d

to the muscles (motor)

Slide4

Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)

Def: made up of nerves that connect to the heart, blood vessels, smooth muscles and glands

Controls involuntary behavior

No need to think

Separated in 2 division

Sympathetic and parasympathetic

Slide5

ANS (Cont.)

Sympathetic Division- active in stressful situations (fight or flight)

Used for emergencies, accelerates heart r

ate, respiration, blood pressure

Slows digestion and drains blood lessening bleeding

Parasympathetic division- relaxing state

Conserves bodily resources and stores energy

Slow heart rate, reduce blood pressure, promote digestion
