1. Edvotek AMA 2020-21Danielle R. Snowflack, Ph.D.www.edvotek.com

2. EDVOTEKThe Biotechnology Education CompanyCelebrating OVER 30 years of science education!

3. Preparing for the 2020-21 School YearTeaching in the pastTeaching in 2020

4. Perishable items? No problem!Order your experiments as you do every year.If you order a kit from us, we include a perishable coupon which NEVER EXPIRES.If you receive your perishables and plans change, most are good for nine months if stored at the proper temperature.

5. Splitting up ELISA kitsEach experiment comes with directions on how to divide, aliquot, and store reagents. For best results, we recommend preparing the secondary antibody and the ABTS no more than 24 hours before the experiment. Our stability studies have shown that the reagents can still be used for up to five days after preparation.

6. Splitting up Electrophoresis kitsGels can be poured and stored under buffer in the refrigerator, and electrophoresis buffer made in bulkQuickStrips mean no aliquoting!Dye gels must be photographed immediately after running.Bands on DNA gels remain bright if stored properly:Following electrophoresis and staining, place each gel in a small plastic storage bag.Add an additional 1-2 ml of electrophoresis buffer.Place in the fridge.Additional information available on our blog.

7. Splitting up Transformation kitsPlates can be stored in the refrigerator after being poured.DNA, CaCl2, and recovery broth can be aliquoted and stored in the refrigerator.Source plates need to be prepared 16-20 hours before the lab period.Transformed bacteria plates can be stored in the refrigerator until students return.

8. Setting up your live streamAn old cell phone, when hooked up to an inexpensive gooseneck phone holder, can be used as a webcamGive students protocol ahead of time and have them ‘guide’ the experiment.Dye electrophoresis allows students to watch the bands resolve in real time.

9. DNA electrophoresis visualizationFlash Blue (visible DNA stain)Staining and destaining takes 30 minutesNo additional equipmentSybr Safe (fluorescent DNA stain)Fast, when added to gelRequires visualization systemBonus: The TruBlu2 can be used for transformation experiments to excite GFP

10. M-12 plus DuoSourceEdvotek EDGEBest electrophoresis setups for live streaming (or loaner labs)

11. Points to consider with live demosDo not require your students to turn cameras on. If students ask a question in the chat, be sure to read the question before answering. There will be a lag time in responses. Find creative ways to fill the pauses.Record all sessions for students to watch later.Tips inspired by Dr. Nicole Campbell: https://twitter.com/drsoup09/status/1288108624271745026?s=20

12. Additional online teaching strategiesFilm a short introductory video to introduce yourself to studentsTest your online content on multiple devices.Couple pre-recorded videos (by you or others) or readings with critical thinking questions to be discussed on a discussion board like Slack.Set up a discussion board where students can help and support one another.

13. Protocol Amendment:Human PCR ExperimentsReplacement for cheek cell protocol, which requires rinsing mouth with saline and spitting into a cup.MUST get the roots.Protocol has been tested with all human PCR kits. All reagents needed for hair DNA isolation included in kit.For more information, check our our blog post.

14. Free online resources to help you teach every topicEdvotek at Home lessons includes study questions and a PowerPoint PresentationVideo tutorials detail biotechnology techniquesPrintable Activity Sheets, including a coloring page and a word puzzlehttps://www.edvotek.com/guides-lesson-plans

15. Real, hands-on science at home with Edvotek MyLab™ Custom KitsEach kit contains enough reagents to perform the experiment 2-3 times. We can send to one address or directly to your students.Experiments include DNA isolation, forensic blood typing, COVID antibody testing simulation, and chromatography.https://www.edvotek.com/Experiments/mylab-distance-learning
