As a young Photographer/Artist (b.1980) Derek Wiafe's photographs set themselves apart with a color palette and cinematic lighting style that cinemate the social experiences amongst his empathetic choice of subject: modern British youth culture.

The deep sense of curiosity that underlines Wiafe's work is nurtured by the teenage experience of maturing amongst a generation of estate kids who lived outside the realities of a deprived lower class existence, using slang and music to image poetic evocations of themselves in their lower city life. This turned his work towards creating photographic portraits of troubled adolescents, teenagers, and young adults that mixed a formal classicism with a stagecraft and lighting rhetoric which cinemated their everyday experiences of social exclusion and disenfranchisement. Beit the turbulent and challenging experiences that weather the faces of Lambeth’s young fathers or the lifting the veil on British girls beset on the virtual glamour life of bedroom celebrity in the digital media age, his starting point is poised with the gap of enigma that exists between our own imaginations and the real, and the construction of cultural identities.

Sidelining his work with lecturing residencies in Lens Based Media at Coventry University, Wiafe further engages in the development of emerging visual talent through tutoring various artist-teacher schemes including The Cut Newspaper. He is also the creator and tutor behind the' Our World Untitled'; a lauded Artist- Teacher scheme exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, London (2005) as part of Channel Four's Self Portrait Prize.
