Shinto is one of the two major religions in Japan.  The other is Buddhism.  Shinto began in the prehistoric period.  Shinto stresses an appreciation for the beauties of nature.  The earth, sky, sea, sun, moon, and the stars are worshipped as gods.  The sun is worshipped as the goddess Amaterasu, ancestress of the Japanese emperors.  The moon is the male god, while Mount Fuji is the mountain goddess.  Shinto festivals are held throughout the year, especially at the change of seasons in spring and fall.
