Need a sheet of paper to make a chart.Slide2

Make this chart and we will fill it in.

Grade 3

Strain

SprainSlide3

Grades of Strain

Grade 1

Local pain which increases with tension on muscle.

Minor loss of strength.

Mild swelling and ecchymosis.

Local tenderness.

Where in the muscle can a

strain occur?Slide4

Grades of Strain

Grade 2

Similar to grade 1 but:

Moderate S/S

Impaired muscle function.Slide5

Grades of Strain

Grade 3

S/S are severe.

Loss of muscle function.

Palpable defect.

Highest incidence muscles:

Hamstrings

Gastrocnemius

Quadriceps

Hip flexors

Rotator cuffsSlide6

Grades of Sprains

Grade 1

Some stretching and separation of fibers.

Minimal instability.

Mild pain, swelling and joint stiffness.Slide7

Grades of Sprains

Grade 2

Some tearing and separation of fibers.

Moderate instability.

Moderate pain, swelling, and joint stiffness.Slide8

Grades of Sprains

Grade 3

Total tearing of ligament.

Severe instability.

Can result in subluxation.

Severe pain then followed by no to little pain from disruption of nerve fibers.

Severe swelling and joint stiffness some hours later.

Rule out other ligament damage.
