Final ProjectSlide2

Your Choice!

Theme: Idioms/words

e.g. “rule of thumb,” “cold turkey,” “under the weather,” etc.

What You’re Doing:

You are going to create a 3D visual representation of an idiom, or a visual pun

You pick the idiom and the medium. Medium must be something we’ve used this year.Slide3

What is an Idiom?

A phrase or fixed expression that has a figurative, or sometimes literal, meaning. An idiom’s figurative meaning is different from the literal meaning.

Examples:

Twist my arm

Look like a million bucks

Find your feetBed of grassHit the books/hay/sackDucks in a rowSlide4

Visual Pun

Visual representation of a homophonic word

Example: Shoehorn

This is an actual shoehorn, for putting shoes on:

Here is a visual pun of a “shoe horn”:Slide5

Materials—Your Choice

Media Options:

Clay

Plaster

Wire

Plaster gauze (with wire armature)Décor Options:Glaze (with clay only)Acrylic paint

Watercolors Paper mache Slide6

Steps

Pick idiom—Google “American idioms” or “sculpture puns” if you need ideas

Think about what your visual representation would be

Decide what material would work best for that representation

Long, skinny parts/shapes?

 wire, plaster gauze/wireRounded, thicker parts/shapes?  clay, plasterSlide7

Guidelines

At least 7 in. tall/long

Fully 3D, freestanding

Clay: hollow; Wire: fully rounded, not flat

Viewable from all angles

Craftsmanship requirements according to mediumMUST be completely finished by the day of your final *for clay pieces, this means FIRED and OUT of the kiln

the day before your final

You will use this piece in the final peer critique
