Set Your Hope By Setting Your Mind
Fix Your Hope upon the Eternal Grace
There is an eternal grace
being brought at
the revelation of Jesus Christ
We must fix/set/rest our hope on that grace!
Biblical
hope:
Involves
expectation + desire fused together (Phil. 1:21-23)
Involves
an unwavering confidence and assurance (2 Tim. 4:8)
Should
be set fully, completely, unreservedly
(2 Tim. 1:12)
Must be
constantly reaching for the grace
to be revealed
(
Phil.
3:12-14)
But
that expectation and confidence is only for those for those who
are
walking faithfully with the Lord (cf. 1:3+22-23)Slide3
Set Your Hope By Setting Your Mind
By First Controlling Your Thoughts
“Gird up the loins of your mind”
A
Preparation: To gather up long, flowing garments by means of a belt
A
Preventative: To keep from impeding or hindering desired activity
Before action is even taken, the mind must be
engaged properly
Gathering
up all improper thoughts, feelings and activities of mind
Restraining
them
Removing
those things that
are improper/harmful
To keep
them from hindering
progress
toward heaven (cf.
2
Cor. 10:5)
Christians
have been called to active service in the kingdom (Luke 12:35-37
)
Serving
God demands loving Him with all one’s “mind” (Matt. 22:37)Slide4
Set Your Hope By Setting Your Mind
And Then By Controlling Your Temper
“Be sober”
A soberness which evidences itself in self-control and self-restraint
A soberness which is produced by continual calmness of mind and spirit
A soberness which considers matters in careful, watchful, circumspect, sensible ways to make wise decisions
The sober-minded exhibits great restraint of temper (cf. 1 Pet. 5:8; 4:7 + 2:11)
Controlling habits of thought
Controlling attitude toward irritations
Controlling the desires of the
fleshSlide5
