Assignment 2Slide2

Content Passion

I teach primarily animal science topics, as well as our intro class, while my co-teacher covers the plant and natural resource pathway classes we offer, which is fortunate because that really aligns with our personal passions well. Some of my favorite topics include:

Domestication and the evolution of mankind from primarily hunter/gatherer to agriculturalist and the impact that’s had on society & human culture

Animal welfare and the distinction between welfare & rightsGenetics and genetic modification, especially as it relates to feeding the worldHunger and poverty and how we can individually and collectively impact thoseService is a big one too. I’m working on integrating a service project into each of my classes. Companion Animals does the Project for Awesome each December and my Exploring class contributed to Kiva loans this year

Within your subject matter, what are you passionate about teaching? In other words, of all the topics and standards you teach as part of your curriculum, which are the ones you most enjoy?Slide3

Professional Passion

Opening and helping people to change their perspectives is one of my joys in education, certainly something I’ve learned to be better about as well

As I mentioned in our first assignment, connection is a big drive for me, so as an educator, making those connections in all sorts of contexts gets me fired up

Like many educators, just helping students grow and find success and teaching them to just be better people (service, leadership, communicationMaking a positive impact on the workplace and school culture has also been a big motivator for me this year that’s gotten me excited. Helping other teachers to keep the fires burning is something I’ve been trying to take time to do within my school and spreading the positivity helps keep me going too.Within your profession, but not specific to your subject matter, what are you passionate about? What is it about being an educator that drives you? What ignites a fire inside of you?Slide4

Personal Passion

I am a huge nerd, I am really passionate about Harry Potter (I taught an honors seminar on HP three times in college), reading, fantasy series, comic book movies,

etc

(again, all those awesome connections, both within their literary/cinematic worlds but also in our culture and history/mythology)I love animals, especially dogs and I’m obsessed with dog sled racing. We tie the Yukon Quest and Alaskan huskies into our genetics unit and the students follow and try to pick the winning musher every yearMy family is an important part of my life and though I live about 2 hours from them, staying an active and a part of their lives is big for me (which is partially why I’m a passionate defender/user of social media)

Also passionate about the outdoors, service, technology and I am very passionate about writing, it’s probably the only thing I love as much as teaching (I’m very excited to be going to a story-focused convention with a lot of well known authors

this fall!)

Completely outside of your profession, what are you passionate about?
