Sacred Orders

OT: Preparation 1. The Jewish people were a priestly nation (Ex 19:6). 2. The tribe of Levi (deacons) was set apart ( Nb 1:48-53). 3. Melchizedek ( Gn 14:18). 4. Moses consecrated Aaron and his sons as priests (Ex 29:1-30). 5. Moses set apart 70 elders (Nm 11:24-25). 6. Psalm 109:2-4: You are a priest for ever . . . 7. Ezekiel was also a priest ( Ez 1:3). 8. Jeremiah belonged to a priestly family (Jr 1:1).

NT: Institution Incarnation. Sacrifice on the altar of the cross. Christ is God, anointed, and a victor over death. Petrine office (Mt 16:13-19). 12 apostles (Mk 3: 13-19). Institution of Holy Eucharist (Lk 22:19). 72 coworkers (Lk 10:1-20).

Early Church 1. Investure by the apostles (Acts 13:3). 2. Three offices : Diakonos ( διάκονος ) (Ac 6:1-6). Presbyteros ( πρεσβύτερος ) (Elders). Episcopos ( ἐπίσκοπος ) (Overseers).

Minister The Bishop. Must himself be validly ordained. Must be in communion with the Holy See. Should obtain dimissorial letters if the deacon/priest is not his own subject. These should come from the ordinand’s bishop/superior.

Recipient: requirements Period of trial and formation. Steps: Admission, lector, acolyte, petition for admission to Holy Orders, commitment to accomplish it, assumption of celibacy. 2. Studies and experience (2 years of philosophy and 4 of theology(including pastoral work).

3. Age (23 years old, diaconate). Permanent diaconate: 25 yrs , if not married, and 35 if married). Presbyterate: 25 years. Episcopate: 35 years. 4. Freedom. 5. Favorable judgement from the bishop. 6. Must have received confirmation. 7. Non-existence of impediment. 8. Should be male.

Perpetual impediments Psychological illness. Heresy. Apostasy. Schism. Homicide. Abortion. Attempted marriage when already married. NB. All impediments can be dispensed from by the Pope/Bishop.

Rights and Duties of Clerics (cc 273-289) Obedience to the hierarchy. Availability for service and fidelity in the ministry. Fraternity and collaboration. Holiness of life. Chastity and celibacy.

6. Right of association. 7. Permanent formation. 8. Common life. 9. Right to support. 10. Detachment from temporal goods. 11. Duty of residence and right to a vacation. 12. Clerical attire. 13. Abstention from secular commitments, offices, and activity.

Matter and Form Matter : Laying/imposition on of hands. Form : The consecratory prayer, which follows the imposition of hands.

Effects Permanent Sacramental character and grace. Empowers the recipient to: Teach. Govern. Sanctify.
