In 1781 Carl Wilhelm Scheele discovered that a new acid, Tungstic acid, could be created from
Scheelite
. Together with his brother
Torbern
Bergman he came up with the theory that a new metal could be created from this acid and he was right. Slide4
Physical properties
Tungsten has a melting point of 3,422 °C. Tungsten is commonly found in a solid from because of it’s high melting point. It is a steel-grey colour. It is often brittle and hard to work. Slide5
Importance
It is important to life on earth as tungsten carbide is used to make tools such as knives drills and circular saws. It is also used for casing around grenades and bullets. It is sometimes used to make halogen light bulbs.
