“Be Holy As I Am Holy”

The Meaning of Holiness and How to Walk It OutSlide8

The Call to be Holy

As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.

But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy

." (1

Kepha

1:14-16)Slide9

Where is it written: “Be Holy For I Am Holy”?

Leviticus 11:44-45

Leviticus 19:2

Leviticus 20:7

Leviticus 20:26

Leviticus 11-22 is therefore called “the Holiness Code”Slide10

Dictionary.com–adjective

specially recognized as or declared sacred by religious use or authority; consecrated:

dedicated or devoted to the service of God, the church, or religion:

a holy man.

saintly; godly; pious; devout:

The director, when angry, is a holy terror. Slide12

A Little Abstract? Nebulous? Intangible?

Sacred

and

consecrated

are more of those abstract,

vague

terms that still leave us all

hazy, uncertain

and without a clear grasp of the meaning of

holy

.  Telling us that its related to "religious use or authority" really doesn't help much either.  We already know that holy is related to our religious walk of faith.  But what exactly does it mean? Slide13

Did You Know…

That the Meaning of “Holy” and “Holiness” Does Not Have to Be a Mystery. These terms are Abstract and Fuzzy. But We Can Have a Clear Understanding of Its Meaning

We Do Not Have to Guess About How to Live a Holy Life

Living a Holy Life Can Be Easy to Understand and Attainable.Slide14

Brown, Driver, Briggs Lexicon (BDB)

Our

word comes from the Hebrew root

vdq

(pronounced

kădăsh

), which

comes

from the "poss. orig. idea of

separation, withdrawal

." Slide15

BDB goes on to further describe our word:

vd;Q

'

(

(

qadash

) v

. denom.

be set apart,

consecrated

, separated

vd,qo

apartness,

sacredness

, one who is separated

vAdq

(

.

sacred, holy; separate from human infirmity, impurity, and sin Slide16

The Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament (TWOT)

says

vd,qo

(

qodesh

)

apartness, holiness, sacredness.Slide17

TWOT

The meaning "to separate" is favored by many scholars, but the fact that

qdsh

rarely, if ever, occurs in a secular sense makes any positive conclusion in this regard difficult because of the limited evidence on which to base philological comparison.Slide18

TWOTIn

the

Qal

the verb

qadash

is used most frequently to describe

the state of consecration

effected by

Levitical

ritual

. In

Exo

29:21, 37;

Exo

30:29 certain articles used in the

Levitical

service were consecrated to God and were thus recognized as belonging to the realm of the sacred. Slide19

Dictionary.com

consecrate

means "to make or declare sacred;

set apart or dedicate to the service of a deity

" or "

to devote or dedicate to some purpose

."

  Slide20

TWOT - Transmission of the state of holiness to anything that touched a person or object so consecrated (

Exo

29:37;

Exo

30:29; Lev 6:18 [H 11], 27 [H 20]) does not necessarily imply that a transferable divine energy exists in the "holy." Rather,

it seems that the person or object entered the state of holiness in the sense of becoming subject to cultic restrictions

, as were other holy persons or objects,

in order to avoid diffusion of the sacred and the profane

....Slide21

So, then, Holy means…

T

he

noun

holy

should be understood as "something which is separate or set-apart (devoted) for a specific purpose."

The

verb

to make holy

or

to be holy

means

the act of “separating

something for a particular purpose

,"

The

adjective

holy

describes

something that has been set apart or separated for a particular purpose.Slide22

Principle of First Use

Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.  By the seventh day Elohim had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.  And Elohim blessed the seventh day and

made it holy

, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. (

Bereshith

[Genesis] 2:1-3

)Slide23

The Separations of Creation

(

Heb

bdl

)

*Day 1- Light from Darkness (v4)

*Day 2 – Waters Above from Below (v6-7)

Day 3 – Land from Gathered Water

*Day 4 – Day from Night (v14,18)

(Day 6? – Woman from Man)

Day 7 – Sabbath Day from the other SixSlide24

How to Keep the Sabbath Holy

Remember

the

Sabbath

day

to keep it holy (set

it

apart).

For six days you may labor and do all your work

, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to

Yehovah

your Elohim;

on it you shall not do any work

, you, or your son, or your daughter, or your male servant, or your female servant, or your cattle, or your resident foreigner who is in your gates. (Ex

20:8-10)Slide25

Guard the day of the Sabbath to set it apart

just as

Yehovah

your

Elohim

has commanded you.  You are to serve and do all your work in six days, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of

Yehovah

your Elohim.

On

that day you must not do any work, you, your son, your daughter, your male

servant,

your female

servant,

your ox, your donkey, any other animal, or the foreigner who lives with you, so that your male and female slaves, like yourself, may have

rest.

(

Deut

5:12-14)Slide26

Did You Know…

That When You Guard the Sabbath Day to Set It Apart,

Yehovah

is Setting You Apart from the World and All Pretenders?

In Doing So, You are Becoming Holy as

Yehovah

is HolySlide27

Setting Apart the Sabbath Sets Us Apart

"

Say to the sons of

Yisrael

, 'You must

guard

my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am

Yehovah

,

who makes you

holy. Guard

the Sabbath, because it is holy to you

.’” (Exodus 31:13-14)Slide28

Now the One who created the heavens and the earth and

the sea and all that is in them

was establishing a permanent memorial of his creative acts

on the Seventh Day by

establishing the seventh day as that time when all mankind is to

stop all his

own activity and separate the Sabbath from the other six days to

honor and acknowledge

the Creator of

all. When we set the Sabbath apart for this purpose, we are keeping it holy.Slide29

Did You Know…

That When You Keep

Yehovah’s

Commandments You are Setting Yourself Apart from the World and All Religious Pretenders and

Yehovah

is Setting You Apart?

In Doing So, You are Becoming Holy as

Yehovah

is HolySlide30

Where is it written: “Be Holy For I Am Holy”?

Leviticus 11:44-45

Leviticus 19:2

Leviticus 20:7

Leviticus 20:26

Leviticus 11-22 is therefore called “the Holiness Code”Slide31

Yehovah

said to

Mosheh

,

"Speak to the entire assembly of

Yisrael

and say to them:

'Be holy because I,

Yehovah

your Elohim, am

holy

.

"

'Each of you must

respect his mother and father

, and you must

observe my Sabbaths

. I am

Yehovah

your

Elohim.

"

'Do not turn to idols or make gods of cast metal

for yourselves. I am

Yehovah

your Elohim

.

(Leviticus 19:1-4)Slide32

Holy Living – The “Law of Loving Your Neighbor”

Leviticus 19:11-18

Do

not steal.

Do not lie.

Do not deceive one another.

Do not swear falsely by my name and so profane the name of your Elohim. I am

Yehovah

.

  Slide33

Do not defraud your neighbor or rob him.

Do not hold back the wages of a hired man overnight.

Do not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block in front of the blind, but fear your Elohim. I am

Yehovah

.

Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly.  Do not go about spreading slander among your people

.Slide34

Do not do anything that endangers your neighbor's life. I am

Yehovah

.

Do not hate your brother in your heart.

Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in his guilt.

Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am

Yehovah

.

(19:11-18)Slide35

It is Yehovah

Who Makes You Holy

*Separate*

yourselves and be holy, because I am

Yehovah

your Elohim.  Keep my decrees and follow them. I am

Yehovah

,

who makes you

holy

.

(Leviticus 20:7-8)

*Consecrate, dedicate, cause yourself to be separatedSlide36

The Law is Holy

So

then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good

. (Romans 7:12)Slide37

"'Keep all my decrees and laws and follow them

, so that the land where I am bringing you to live may not vomit you

out.

You must not live according to the customs of the nations I am going to drive out before you

.

Because they did all these things, I abhorred

them.

But I said to you, "You will possess their land; I will give it to you as an inheritance, a land flowing with milk and honey

. “

I am

Yehovah

your Elohim,

who has set you apart from the nations

.

(Lev 20:22-24)Slide38

Did You Know…

That When You Keep

Yehovah’s

Restrictions Regarding Sexuality You are Setting Yourself Apart from the World and All Pretenders?

In Doing So, You are Becoming Holy as

Yehovah

is HolySlide39

Paul’s Instructions About How to Live

Finally, brothers,

we instructed you how to live

in order to please Elohim, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Master

Yeshua

to do this more and more.  For

you know what instructions we gave

you by the authority of the Master

Yeshua

.

(1 Thessalonians 4:1-2)Slide40

Holiness in the Sexual Arena

It

is Elohim's will that you should be

holy (set apart):

that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable

, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know Elohim;

and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him

.

Yehovah

will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you.

For Elohim did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life

. (1 Thessalonians 4:3-7)Slide41

"You shall not commit adultery.”

(Exodus 20:14)

"You

shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor

.“ (20:17)

"

You shall not lust after your neighbor's wife. You shall not set your desire on your neighbor's house or land, his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor

.“ (Deuteronomy 5:21)Slide42

Flee

from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.

Do

you not know that

your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit

, who is in you, whom you have received from Elohim? You are not your own; you were bought at a price.

Therefore honor Elohim with your body

. (1 Corinthians

6:18-20

)Slide43

Vayikra

(Leviticus) 18:1-24

According of some, these laws are done away with.

Is there any New Testament evidence that these

Levitical

Laws pertaining to sexuality are still valid for the followers of Messiah?Slide44

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that does not occur even among pagans: A man has his father's wife

.  And you are proud! Shouldn't you rather have been filled with grief and have put out of your fellowship the man who did

this

?

(1Corinthians 5:1-3)

Vayiqra

18:8: "

Do not have sexual relations with your father's wife; that would dishonor your father

." Slide45

Your boasting is not good. Don't you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of

dough?

Get rid of the old yeast that you may be a new batch without yeast-

- as you really are. For Messiah, our Pesach lamb, has been

sacrificed.

Therefore

let us

keep the Festival

, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with

bread without yeast

, the bread of sincerity and truth

. (1 Corinthians 5:5-8)Slide46

I have written you in my letter

not to associate

(separate from that one) with

sexually immoral people-- not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world.

But

now I am writing you that

you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler

. With such a man do not even eat. (1 Corinthians

5:9-12)Slide47

Did You Know…

That Watching Over Your Body to Keep It Clean is a Spiritual Act of Worship?

In Doing So, You are Becoming Holy as

Yehovah

is HolySlide48

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of Elohim's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to Elohim-- this is your spiritual act of worship

.  Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what Elohim's will is-- his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:1-2)Slide49

I have written you quite boldly on some points, as if to remind you of them again

, because of the grace Elohim gave me to be a minister of Messiah

Yeshua

to the Gentiles with the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of Elohim,

so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to Elohim, set apart by the Holy Spirit

. (Romans 15:15-16)Slide50

Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness,

so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness

.  When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness.

What

benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death!

But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to Elohim, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life

. (Romans 6:19-22)Slide51

Did You Know…

That When You Keep

Yehovah’s

Dietary Laws You are Watching Over Your Body and You are Setting Yourself Apart from the World and All Pretenders?

In Doing So, You are Becoming Holy as

Yehovah

is HolySlide52

What agreement is there between the temple of Elohim and idols? For we are the temple of the living Elohim. As Elohim has said: "I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their Elohim, and they will be my people.

Therefore come out from them and be separate

," says

Yehovah

.

"

Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you

. Slide53

I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters," says

Yehovah

Almighty.  Since we have these promises, dear friends,

let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness

out of reverence for Elohim. (2 Corinthians 6:16-7:1)Slide54

Vayikra

(Leviticus) 11:1-42

Do

not defile yourselves by any of these creatures. Do not make yourselves unclean by means of them or be made unclean by

them.

I am

Yehovah

your Elohim;

consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy

. Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves about on the

ground.

I am

Yehovah

who brought you up out of

Mitzrayim

to be your Elohim; therefore

be holy, because I am holy

. (

vss

"'Keep all my decrees and laws and follow them

, so that the land where I am bringing you to live may not vomit you

out.

You must not live according to the customs of the nations I am going to drive out before you

.

Because they did all these things, I abhorred

them.

But I said to you, "You will possess their land; I will give it to you as an inheritance, a land flowing with milk and honey

. “

I am

Yehovah

your Elohim,

who has set you apart from the nations

.

(Lev 20:22-24))Slide56

"'You must therefore make a distinction between clean and unclean animals and between unclean and clean birds. Do not defile yourselves by any animal or bird or anything that moves along the ground--

those which I have set

apart (!!)

as unclean for

you

.

You

are to be holy to me because I,

Yehovah

,

am holy

, and

I have set you apart from the nations to be my own

. (Leviticus 20:22-26)Slide57

Does the issue of clean\unclean really matter when it comes to salvation? Is it a “salvation issue”?

Make

every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy;

without holiness no one will see

Yehovah

.

(Hebrews 12:14)Slide58

Isaiah 35:8

And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness.

The unclean will not journey on it; it will be for those who walk in that Way

; wicked fools will not go about on it.Slide59

Depart, depart, go out from there! Touch no unclean thing! Come out from it and be pure, you who carry the vessels of

Yehovah

.

But

you will not leave in haste or go in flight; for

Yehovah

will go before you, the Elohim of

Yisrael

will be your rear

guard.

Isaiah 52:11-12Slide60

All day long

I have held out my hands to an obstinate people

,

who walk in ways not good

, pursuing their own imaginations-

- a

people who continually provoke me to my very face, offering sacrifices in gardens and burning incense on altars of

brick; who

sit among the graves and spend their nights keeping secret vigil;

who eat the flesh of pigs

, and

whose pots hold broth of unclean

meat

; who

say, 'Keep away; don't come near me, for I am too set apart for you!' Such people are smoke in my nostrils, a fire that keeps burning all day

. (

Isaiah 65:2-5)Slide61

Did You Know…

That When You Make Distinctions Between Clean and Unclean and Between Holy and Common You are Setting Yourself Apart from the World and All Pretenders?

In Doing So, You are Becoming Holy as

Yehovah

is HolySlide62

You must distinguish between the holy and the common, between the unclean and the clean

Yisrael

all the decrees

Vayiqra

You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean

, between living creatures that may be eaten and those that may not be eaten

.'“

Vayikra

(Leviticus

)

11:47Slide64

How Does Yehovah

Feel About Eating Unclean?

Again

the word of

Yehovah

came to me: "Son of man, say to the land, 'You are a land that has had no rain or showers in the day of wrath.'  There is a conspiracy of her princes within her like a roaring lion tearing its prey; they devour people, take treasures and precious things and make many widows within her. Slide65

How Does Yehovah

Feel About Eating Unclean?

Her

priests do violence to my Torah and profane my holy things; they do not distinguish between the holy and the common; they teach that there is no difference between the unclean and the clean

; and

they shut their eyes to the keeping of my Sabbaths

, so that I am profaned among them. (

Yechezqel

22:23-26)Slide66

Did You Know…

That When You Are Disciplined By His Instructions About Holiness, You Are Preparing to See

Yehovah

?Slide67

The Discipline of Holiness

Our

fathers

disciplined

us for a little while as they thought best; but Elohim

disciplines

us for our good,

that we may share in his holiness

.

 No

discipline

seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Slide68

The Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines

discipline

as "training that corrects, molds, or perfects the mental faculties or moral character" or "a rule or system of rules governing conduct or activity."  This is the kind of discipline Hebrews is talking about.

Elohim

wants to train us to walk in his ways in order to perfect our character to be like him.  He does this by giving us the Instruction of his Word.  And the Instruction for holy living and training in holiness is that which we have been examining from

Vayiqra

11-22.Slide69

The Discipline of Holiness

Therefore

, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees.  "Make level paths for your feet," so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.

Make every effort

to live in peace with all men and

to be holy

;

without holiness no one will see

Yehovah

.
