Goal Setting and Learner Autonomy
When we look at Adult Learning Principles, we know that adults:Are autonomous and self-directed/motivatedAre goal-orientedAre relevancy-oriented and often practicalBring experience/prior learning to the tableLike to be respected and valuedSlide5Slide6
Autonomy is taught.
To be autonomous involves being able to self-regulate (this is a complex meta-cognitive function) and to evaluate ones’ learning (also a complex meta-cognitive function). Successful learners are able to think about their learning, their success, and to augment their actions/support/etc. to help them learn better. This function lives in the frontal lobe of the brain and is considered part of one’s Executive Function
The frontal lobe isn’t
fully developed until the age of 22-25 and needs to be cultivated. We don’t just “know” how to do all this

Goal Setting is part of learning
Language counselling is a step towards learning. For some, it is one of many that have already been taken, for others it may be one of the first. To be a successful goal setter, some learners need to become familiar with the concepts of a goal and for others it is a chance to voice them.Slide8
Setting Goals for Success
Language counselling gives all learners, regardless of ability or prior learning, a chance to think about and set goals for language learning.Taking time to ask the question, “why do you want to improve your English/French?” gives learners a chance to set their own priorities, understand the pathways to meet their goals and all the while validating their vision of the future.Slide9
Learning from learners
Language counselling is a two way street. It-validates learners’ experience and goals-ensures learners are informed about relevant options-introduces goal setting to learners to prepare for success-informs instructors about the needs,
experience, concerns
, barriers facing and aims of learners and potential learners in our programs.Slide10Slide11
