Comma Splices Alabama Agriculture and Mechanical University Writing Center The “Write Place”

What IS A COMMA SPLICE? Comma splices occur when there is a comma placed in between two independent clauses. Here are some examples: Tara is a merit scholar, she has a 4.0 grade point average. Tony is a football player, he is also good at baseball.Jason purchased a new car, he loves to drive his old car.

In order to fix a comma splice, the writer can include another form of punctuation or connecting words.

Using Semi-COLONS In the case of the first sentence, a semi-colon could be placed after “scholar” identifying that this is the end of the first independent clause. Before : Tara is a merit scholar, she has a 4.0 grade point average. (comma splice) After: Tara is a merit scholar; she has a 4.0 grade point average. The use of a semi-colon is appropriate in this sentence because the first independent clause leads to the next.

Creating two separate sentences Another way to revise a comma splice is simply by splitting the two sentences. Before: Tony is a football player, he is also good at baseball. (comma splice) After: Tony is a football player. He is also good at baseball. Splitting these two sentences is helpful because they both have a different main idea.

Using coordinating Conjunctions In the case of the third sentence, a coordinating conjunction can be used to merge two thoughts. The coordinating conjunctions are F-for; A-and; N-nor ; B-but; O-or; Y- yet ; S- so . (F.A.N.B.O.Y.S) Before : Jason purchased a new car, he loves to drive his old car. (comma splice) After: Jason purchased a new car, but he loves to drive his old car. The sentence shows contrast, so it is important to use a coordinating conjunction here that also shows contrast.
