National Park ServiceU.S. Department of the InteriorCumberland GapNational Historical Park PreparationBefore you enter the backcountry, stop bythe park visitor center for trail maps andinformation. Ifyou plan to camp overnight, a free backcountrypermit will reserve yourcampsite. Sites maybe reserved up to threemonths in advance. Take the minimum numberofhorses necessary, and be sure theyarehealthy, calm, and experienced. Horse trailers maybe parked in the gravel lotalong the entrance road to the WildernessRoad Campground and at the Dark RidgeOverlook near Sugar Run. Privatelyownedparking lots are located near Civic Park inEwing, VA, and near the Shillalah Creek Roadtrailhead. There is no overnight camping withhorses available near the parking areas. Arrive Horseback Riding at Cumberland Gap A unique experience awaits horseback riders at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.In Parking On the Trails Trace Fires should be built in the fire rings provided. Useonlydeadfall wood no thicker than an adultĀs wrist.Do not tie horses directlyto trees to preventbark damage and avoid trampling root systems.Use the hitching posts or corral provided, anduse a highline ifmore space is needed. Hobblehorses prone to pawing. Allow horses onlydryfeed for a daybefore youride to keep manure drier and attract fewerinsects. Horses should be fed from a nosebag,or their feed should be put on a groundcloth toavoid attracting wild animals. Please use only
