Pitfalls A disadvantage to being a firefighter is the risk of injury or death. most firefighters work 24-hour shifts and an average of 56 hours per week. the average firefighter works 10 full-day shifts a month, giving them 20 or so off-duty days each month .Firefighters are exposed to toxic fumes and, intense heat.
