What is Casein?Casein is the protein of milk and the basic component of cheese. It is made up of amino acids. The term ‘casein’ in derived from the Latin word ‘caseus’ for cheese. It is used in processed foods, adhesives, paints, and other industrial products.Slide4
What is Plastic? Plastic is a synthetic material made from a wide range of organic polymers that can be moulded into shape while soft, and then set into a rigid or slightly elastic form.Slide5
For this experiment, I investigated the chemical reaction of two household ingredients – Milk: C-12H-22O-11 &Vinegar: CH-3COOH+H-20vSlide6
Apparatus1 cup of Whole Milk8 tsps of Distilled Malt VinegarColanderBowlSpoonKitchen PaperSpatulaSlide7
Procedure1 ~ pour milk into bowlSlide8
2 ~ add vinegarSlide9
3 ~ stir and observeSlide10
4 ~ separate the liquid using a colanderSlide11
5 ~ take note of residue left behindSlide12
6 ~ scrape out the residue (curd) and wrap in some kitchen paper to lose any moistureSlide13
7 ~ sculpt the material when it appears malleable and leave to harden for 8 hours in a cool, dry environmentSlide14
ResultThe casein of the milk coagulated to form a hard substance similar to plastic.Slide15
Conclusion The coagulation took place througha chemical reaction where a base (milk) and an acid (vinegar) were in contact with one another. The reaction was caused by polymerizationas well as protein denaturation
.Slide16
PolymerisationWhen the milk reacted with the acetate acid of vinegar, the helix structure of milk (lactose) untangled. The amino acids that make up casein became monomers (a molecule that can be bonded to other identical molecules to form a polymer). The monomers then formed polymers of casein.
This is known as polymerisation.Slide17
Structure of a polymerSlide18
Helix Structure of Milk before acid after acid (untangled)Slide19
Protein DenaturationSimilarly, when the protein of the milk reacted with the acid, the equilibrium of the solution was effected. This caused the water repelling and water attracting molecules to separate and eventually rejoin back together.Protein Denaturisation took place when this happened.Slide20
As a result from both processes, the milk curdled and a precipitate was formed.A precipitate is a substance that was separated from a liquid by a chemical process. In this case, it was the curd from milk.Slide21
In conclusion, based on the experiment and my observations, casein plastic canbe extractedfrom milk.
