JCU Student Retention 2017-18 Data Report

JCU’s retention rate compared to regional and national rates Average retention rate by whether university has greater than 40% of their students from regional or remote areas

Key points Recommendations JCU operates in a challenging environment for student success, retention and completionsDespite these challenges JCU continues to perform better than comparable universities in the sector Different discipline and T & L led initiatives across the university are making an impact on student success and retention PPA developing data collection, analysis and reporting processes to make it quicker and easier to assess if we are making a differenceIncrease investment in student support programs that are the most impactful and required by legislation;Increase investment in student support program enablers;Continue to commit to projects that will transform the student experience;Commit to ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the student experience and support programs;Develop a student engagement strategy for part-time and external students; andInvestigate emerging business models to improve student outcomes .

Maree Dinan Thompson Objectives The YourJCU Working Group will: Use the insights provided by the 2018 YourJCU Subject and Teaching Survey evaluation to identify areas of concern; Consult with academic and professional staff to increase their understanding of the reasons and impacts of YourJCU issues; Identify possible improvement strategies and consult with key stakeholders to make informed decisions about the value and appropriateness of trialling them; and Seek endorsement from appropriate JCU committees to implement new strategies. Key areas of focus Clarify the purpose and use of the YourJCU surveys; and Identify ways forward to strengthen survey data response rates and reliability.

YourJCU Survey WG Proposed strategies : Methods of Student evaluation feedback - method (redevelop question wording and revise the number of questions included), customisation ( trialed with placement subjects 2020 ), frequency and further exploration of how to evaluate ALL staff roles Distribution list Course Coordinators to have access to subject data (qualitative and quantitative) to support course review processes. POLICY AMENDMENTS UNIVERSITY POLICY – ADMISSIONS POLICY, RELATED PROCEDURES AND DELEGATIONS REGISTER – AMENDMENTSnew Admissions Procedure was introduced, the glossary updated and consequential amendments were made to the Delegations Register STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT POLICY, RELATED PROCEDURES AND DELEGATIONS REGISTER – AMENDMENTS new definition of ‘Unprofessional Conduct’

2019 DIVISIONAL ACADEMIC PROGRAM REPORTS (DAPRS)Division of Tropical Environments and Societies (DTES) had reviewed 25 quality improvement actions from 2018 with no new actions identified. The mapping exercise with the Holistic Alignment of Learning Outcomes (HALO) spreadsheet would not be pursued;2019 coursework had been evaluated and the NOUS recommendations would be brought together with this in 2020 for curriculum improvements. This would include identification of the pressure points in staffing profile, facilities and other resources; and There was excellent material on courses that had Industry Advisory Groups, however, further efforts were required by those whose course were without Advisory Groups to attain them and to achieve better alignment of these courses with industry.

PROPOSED TARGETS FOR 2020 KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPIS) AND PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (PIS) Adjustments to various targets in the Research Domain - Field Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI) score was expected to fall whilst HDR Student Completions (international and domestic) remained unchanged for 2020 and this may be challenging but strategies were being put in place to address any decline;Student load targets had been reduced for Commonwealth Supported Places but offset by increased load for JCU Brisbane, JCU Singapore, Keypath programs and international fee paying;
