Name: _________________________Chapter 7: Shadows and Tall TreesInterpret the passages below. Write a telling what the quote means and how it relates to the story as a whole. Use the backside of the paper if you run out of room.1.Ralph found that he was able to measure the distance coldly and take aim. With the boar only five yards away, he flung the foolish wooden stick that he carried, saw it hit the great snout and hang there for a moment…Ralph was full of fright, apprehension and pride.” (113)Ralph has tapped into the primitive side of his psyche. He participates for the first time in the hunt and it excites him, yet he is checked by his ego and is frightened by his behavior. Ralph becomes aware that he has the pleasure principle too.2.“By now, Ralph had no self-consciousness in public thinking but would treat the day’s decisions as though he were playing chess. The only trouble was that he would never be a very good chess player.” (117)Ralph needs to be more of a superego character in order to make the kind of decisions someone like Piggy can make. It takes someone very thoughtful to be a chess player as every move is calculated. Ralph doesn’t pretend that he is as rational as Piggy, though Ralph does have ties to civilization and the adult world absent on the island.3.“Now that the physical voice was silent the inner voice of reason, and the other voices too, made themselves heard. Piggy was calling him a kid. Another voice told him not to be a fool; and the darkness and desperateenterprise gave the night a kind of dentist’s chair unreality.” (122) The physical voice, the id, in Ralph’s mind has been quieted and he can now escape irrational and base thoughts that temporarily clouded his head. Because Ralph is the ego character, he hears the superego (Piggy) calling him a kid. Kids are largely related to the id because they are still in the “I want” stage before rational thought can develop fully. Like the pain of sitting in the dentist’s chair, Ralph is checked by his dominant state of mind that hovers between the id and the superego.4.“In front of them, only three or four yards away, was a rock-like hump where no rock should be. Ralph could hear a tiny chattering noise coming from somewhere-perhaps from his own mouth. He bound himself together with his will, fused his fear and loathing into a hatred, and stood up.He took two leaden steps Ralph is disappointed that he is scaredespecially since he told the others there was no beast. He feels much pressure from both Jack and Piggy. Therefore, Ralph, being the chief knows he must be the one to go first and take care of the beast. He is embarrassed that Jack is unafraid and if he allows Jack to take the lead on this, all orderwill be lost.
