TheHMSMaoriwasattackedbyenemyGermanaircraftandsankathermooringsintheGrandHarbouron12February1942withthelossofoneofhercrew. Shewasraisedandscuttledon15July1945. LocatedafewhundredmetresfromtheshorefromValletta,theHMSMaoriisnowapopulardivesite. Sheliesinwhitesandatadepthof16metres. Muchofthebridgeandsuperstructurearestillextant,includingthefrontgunbase. Muchmarinelifecanbefoundonthewreck. TugboatsSt.Michael&10evel:eginner MaximumDepth: 8metres hesetwotugboatswerescuttledasartificialreefsin1998offZonqorPoint.The10wreck,namedbecauseofthestillvisibleNo.10paintedonthewreck,isa16metrelongintacttugboat. Fromthestern,youwillfindtheSt.Michaeltugatlessthan50metresdistance. Twonicewreckssuitablefor beginners. LighterX-127 Level: BeginnertoAdvanced MaximumDepth: 2metres heLighterX-127isreachedfromtheManoelIslandinMarsamxettHarbour. Toreachthe reck,diversshouldswiminasouth-westerlydirectionatanydepthbetween10-15metres. Theseabedaroundthewreckismuddyandscatteredwithobjectssuchashospitalbeds,wheelchairsandotherobjectsthrownintotheseaduringandafterthewar. Thetorpedodamageatthesternofthevesselisquiteextensive. Throughoutthedive,octopus,smallgroupersandthousandsofdamselfishareencountered. MVOdile Level: MediumtoAdvanced MaximumDepth: 4metres heMVOdile(alsoknownastheMargit)wasanoldsteam-freighterthatsankincourseofabombingattackonApril4,1943atKalkarareef,offGrandHarbour. Thewreckwasdiscoveredinthelateseventies. Thehullisinpoorconditionbecauseitwasdevastatedbytheexplosions(thebowandthepropellersaremissing)andliesonitsportside. Thewreckcoversalargeareaandisdifficultto findinpoorvisibilitywithoutlocalknowledge. Itisrecommendedthatonlyexperienceddiversactuallypenetratethewreckasproperequipmentincludingreelsareneeded. P29Boltenhagen Level: Advanced MaximumDepth: 5meters hisex-EastGermanKondorclassminesweeperwasbuiltinthe1960'sandis52metersinlength. In1997shemovedtoMaltatocarryoutvariousdutiesincludingsearchandrescuebeforebeingdecommissionedin2004. In2005,shewassoldtotheMaltaTourismAuthoritymakingherenvironmentallysafebeforescuttlingheron14August2007. TugboatRozi Level: MediumtoAdvanced MaximumDepth: 6metres nMarfaPoint(northofMalta),oncecanfindanoldmetaljettyandapproximately135metresoutfromhereliesthetugboatRozi. Themaximumdepthofthisdiveis36metres. TheRoziwasa40metretugdeliberatelysunkin1991asanunderwaterattractionforglass-bottomedboattours. TheRozisitsuprightonthesandyseabed,intactexceptforitsenginesandpropeller. ThisisoneofthemostpopulardivesitesontheMalteseIslands,withmuchtoseeandexplore. Theshipissurroundedbythousandsoffish,includingseabreams,scorpionfishandcardinalfish. UmelFaroud Level: Advanced MaximumDepth: 6metres heUmElFaroudwassunkin1998followingaterribleexplosiononboardthatkillednineMaltesedockyardworkers. LyingonthesandyseabedsouthwestofWiediz-Zurrieq,theUmElFaroudweighs10,000tonsandis115metreslong. Thedepthtothetopofthebridgeis18metresand25metrestothemaindeck. Diversmightcomeacrosssomesquidandbarracudasatthestem. Theportsideisusuallyteemingwithlargeschoolsofseabreams,parrotfishandsilversides. Somtimesonecancomeacrosstheoccasionalamberjackandtuna. Thewreckcanbeenteredfairlyeasily,butduetoitssize,thisshouldberestrictedonlytodiverswithadvanced wreckdivingtraining. BristolBeaufighter Level: Advanced MaximumDepth: 7metres uringWorldWarII,in1943,theBristolBeaufighterwasflyingoutofMaltabutunderwentmechanicalfailureandcrashed. TheBeaufightercrashlandedintheseaandisstilllyingintheexactposition,atadepthof37metresrightoutsideSt.Julians. Slightlysmaller,shallowerandinabrighterconditionthantheBomber,theBristolBeaufighterisahighlyregardeddiveamongourguests.Only15minutesbyboatfromthedivecentreoffStJulians,thisisatreatfortheexperienced. HMSHellespont Level: Advanced MaximumDepth: 1metres heHMSHellespontwasapaddledrivensteamtugboatwhichwaslaunchedin1910. ShehasbeeninMaltasince1922untilshewasbombedon the17thofSeptember1940,duringWorldWarII. Shewasrepairedanddamagedagainonthe6/7thofApril,1942. In1944,shewasdeemedbeyondrepairandwastowedtoherpresentlocationoutsidetheGrandHarbour. TheHellespontisagoodwreckwithplenty toseeandsheisalsohistoricallyinteresting. BristolBlenheim Level: Advanced MaximumDepth: 2metres heBristolBlenheimwasalightWorldWarIIbomberintheEnglishairforce,nowlyinginthewatersofXorbil-Ghagin. Theenginesandwingsareintact,buttheforesectionofthefuselagehasbeensmashedoffandnowliesseveralmetresinfrontofthemainpartofthewreckage. hisisanon-stopdivetoadepthof42metreswhichrequirescarefulplanning. Thewreckisfullofinterestingmarinelife. MVImperialEagle Level: Advanced MaximumDepth: 2metres heMVImperialEaglewasoneoftheferryboatsconnectingMaltaandGozo. Thehulllaysonasandybottomatadepthof42metres,300mNorth-EastofQawraPoint. Thewideholdisopenandthewreckallowsaneasyandinterestingdive. ClosebyisastatueofJesusChrist. This13tonstatuewasreallocatedhereinMay2000. ItwasoriginallysunknearSt.Paul'sIslandsandblessedbyPopeJohnPaulin1990toprotectthe fishermenofMalta. HMDrifterEddy Level: Technical MaximumDepth: 56metres MDrifterEddy wasbuiltbyA.Hallandwaslaunchedasadredgerordrifteron6thAugust1918. This27mlongminesweepercarriedoutdutiesforbothWorldWarsbutmetherdoomduringWWIIwhilepatrollingMalta'sharbourwaters. Whilereturningfromherminesweepingduties, shewasstruckbyanItalianmineandsank. Onecanseethedamagecausedbythemineonherstarboardsideassheliesuprightontheseabed. DivingonthiswreckisconsidereddangerousduetoitscloseproximityoftheGrandHarbourentrance. HMSStubborn Level: Technical MaximumDepth: 7metres MSStubbornwasanSclasssubmarineoftheRoyalNaxy,andpartoftheThirdGroupbuiltofthatclass. ShewasbuiltbyCammellLairdandlaunchedonNovember11,1942. Sofar,shehasbeentheonlyshipoftheRoyalNavytobearthenameStubborn. Stubbornspentthewarinhomewaters,operatingofftheScandinaviancoast,andinthePacificFarEast. WhileonpatrolintheBayofBiscay,shefiredtorpedoesatagroupofthreeGermansubmarinesescortedbytwodestroyers. ThetorpedoeshowevermissedtheirtargetsandtheattackwasnotobservedbytheGermans. ThesubmarineswereU-180,U-518,U-530. ThetwoescortswereidentifiedbyStubbornas'Narvik-class'destroyers. HMSStubbornsurvivedtheSecondWorldWarandwassunkonApril30,1946bytheBritishNavyaftersufferingextensivedamage. HMSSt.Angelo Level: Technical MaximumDepth: 8metres histugboatwasusedasharbourtransportforRoyalNavyofficerscarryingpersonnelfromSt.Angelotootherdestinations. Duringthewaritalsoservedfor rescueandthenasaminesweeperwereithitamineandsunk. DivingonthiswreckisconsidereddangerousduetoitscloseproximityoftheGrandHarbourentrance. HMSSouthwold Level: Technical MaximumDepth: 3metres his86mlongHunt-classdestroyerbuiltin1941hadaverysuccessfulbutshortlifespanofaboutoneyear,beforerunningintoafloatingmine. Shetookpartinthehistorical'SecondBattleofSirte'anddespitebeingheavilyoutnumbered,forcedtheItalianstowithdraw. Shenowliesintwosections,thelargestbeingthebowwhilethesternisabout300metersaway. LePolynesien Level: Technical MaximumDepth: 4meters ePolynesienisa19thcenturypassengerlinersunkbyaGermanU-BoattowardstheendofWorldWarOne. At152metresinlengthandweighing6659tons,LePolynesienisoneofthelargestwrecksinMalta. Theshipislyinguprightontheseabed,completeinonepieceandnotheavilybrokenupasmanyshipsofthisageare. Thisisamagnificentwreckdivewithstillmanyartefactsonboard. DivingLePolynesienisonlysuitablefor technicaldiversusingTrimix. SchnellbootS-31(E-boat) Level: Technical MaximumDepth: 7metres heSchnellbootorS-boot("fastcraft")wasatypeofGermantorpedoboatthatsawserviceduringWorldWarII. Thiswreckhasitsanti-aircraftgunsstillstandingandtorpedoesinthetubes. Averyintactwreckdivedbyveryfewdivers. Thewreckisdeepbutforthosewithmixedgasexperienceitisagreatoption.
