1. Planting Marigolds to Manage Insects in BasilSaralyn Smith and Domingo Mata Padrino Introduction:Companion planting is planting crops together that will be beneficial to each other. These benefits range from insect control to soil health. One of the ways companion planting for insects control works is the scent from plants can either attract or repel insects. Marigolds and basil both have attributes that make for great companion planting. Objective: Determine the effects of planting marigolds as a companion crop for basil. Materials and Methods: The experiment was conducted at the WVU Organic Research, Education and Outreach Center (Morgantown, WV) and the WVU Animal Science Research, Education and Outreach Center (Morgantown, WV.) We compared basil plants in organic farming, conventional, and companion planted Marigolds plots, forty basil plants each. Basil plants were transplanted on June 21, 2021 in each plot. Approximately thirty-five marigolds were transplants in the companion plot on June 23, 2021.From July 13, 2021 to July 20, 2021, three yellow insect sticky traps per plot were placed to collect insect populations within the basil crops. The yellow insect sticky traps were then examined under a microscope to identify which insect species were present. Conclusions:Marigolds as a companion crop for basil decrease the number of leafhoppers within the plot. This experiment should be repeated for a longer period of time to see if this trend persist. Results and Discussion:Basil when planted with marigolds had fewer leafhoppers. Figure 2.
