Berea Hardwoods Yari Ball p oint Kit Instru c t ions Middleburg Heights, Ohio 44130 Toll Free 1 - 877 - 736 - 5487 Berea Hardwoods Yari B a llpoi n t ( B erea #1603/ B - xx x ) Needed: Mandrel - Bushings - 58A Drill - 25/64 Wood Size - ¾” x ¾” Preparing the Material Blanks 1. Cut the m aterial blank a little long e r, approxi m ately ¼”, than the tube. 2. Drill the blank through the center, lengt hw ise, with a 25/64 aper. This can be done by hand or on a power m achine such as a belt sander. The p u rpose of the sanding is to clean off the oxidation and roughen the tube so that the glue will have a better adhesion surface. 4. Plug the ends of the tubes with the m ateria l of your choice. So m e use base wax, a dental product, or Play Dough, or even a slice of potato. Just push the ends of the 5. tubes i n to a thin s e ction of the m r m a plug to keep the glue f r om getting into t h e tu b e. 6. Clean the t u be, after pl u gging, with acetone o r alcohol on a rag. 7. Prepare your glue. W e recom m end t w o - hardware stores. Use a fast drying type, one hour or less. Be sure to m i x it thoroughly. (A Post - it Note Pad m akes an ex cellent m i xing place. W hen you are f inished ju s t tear it o f f and throw it aw ay.) Polyurethanes and thick flexible CA’s 8. Place so m e epoxy into the blank using a s m all piece of dowel or ot h er s m all stick. 9. Roll the appropriate tube in the epoxy. 10. Insert the t u be with a t w isting m oti o n until it is al m ost in the m aterial blank. Then use the do w el to push it in until the end is flush with the blank. Use the stick to u e even with the blank and the tube. 11. Push the brass tube t h ro u gh the blank until the ot h er end is fl u sh with the blank. Then rake the glue flush with that e n d. Now push the tube back into the blank until the tu b e is eq u idi st ant between both ends

If you are using CA glue, the wait is only about 60 seconds. When using polyuretha n e the wait will b e about 24 hours. 14. When the glue has cured use a hobby knife to remove the plugs from the ends. It is also a good idea to clean the tubes w ith a brass gun cleani n g brush to remove any glue that m ay have gotten into the tubes. 15. Not cleaning out all glue from the tubes is the most common cause of pen failure. BE CERTAIN that a ll d ried g l ue is r e m oved from inside the tubes before procee d ing. 16. Using a barrel trim m er of the proper size, face o f f the ends of the blan k s u ntil you can just see the bright bra ss end of the tube. STOP facing at this point. Y our pen’s proper operation is dependent on having t h e proper length tubes. This facing operation can also be done with the proper jig and a disk or belt sander. 17. Not having the proper tube length is the #2 cause of pen failure. Sanding, on a disk sander, using a jig to hold the tube s quare with the disk, is a m ore sure way of getting the proper length. It should be tried if you have any doubt as to your abilities to square the material with the barrel trimmer. 18. Another go o d m ethod of squaring the ends of the blank is to turn the b la n k until it is just round. Using a m i ter gauge to m aintain the blank perpendicular to the sanding disk, just touch the ends to the disk. Once the blanks are square and you can see the ends of the t u bes brig h te n , then r e turn the blanks to the m andrel and finish the turning until t h e desired c o ntour is acc o mplished. Turning the Material Blanks 1. Asse m ble the blank on the m andrel using the 58A bushings. 2. Tighten the tailstock be f ore tightening the blanks on the man d rel. This will c

enter the m andrel first. Then tighten the nut that holds the blanks. 3. Turn the blank to the desired conto u r m aking sure that the area next to the bushing is t u rned to the size of the a d jace n t bushing. 4. After turni n g the blank, sand the s u rface in p r ogressive s t eps until you g et to 400 or 500 grit. 5. If a higher polish finish is desired continue sanding with Micro Mesh through 12000 grit. 6. Apply the finish of your choice and polish. 7. R e m ove the blank from the m andrel. 2 58A 58A 58A Bushings Berea Hardwoods Yari Ball p oint Assemble the Pen Please refer to the Pen P arts d i agram The third m ost com m on error resulting in a non - functional or da m aged pen is the m i salign m e nt of the parts when pressing them in place. The use of a good pen press or s m all arbor press is recommended, but it can be acco m plished with a good “C” cla m p and much care. When pressing in the various parts, b y any m eans, BE SURE that the p arts are stra ight and in line with the blanks. If the part is cocked or oth e rwise m isaligned, at the very least, a poor fitting pen will re s ult. At t h e worst, you m ay have a pen that is not usable. Exercise caution here! One other word about pen parts. Occasionally, y o u will enco u nter parts t h at are a little loose fitting. This can be corrected by using a SMALL spot of glue, usually CA, on these parts before pressing them ho m e. 1. Press the large end of twist holder into nib. 2. Press the clip assembly into one end of the blank. 3. Press finial into clip assembly. 4. Insert the refill. Make sure that the spring is in place on the tip end of the refill. 5. Screw the twist mechanism onto the twist holder. Check for proper operation. 6. Slide the blank/finia l/clip assembly over the twist mechanism. Copyright© 2016 - The Berea Hardwoods Co. Inc.
