4. Tick Related DiseasesLyme diseaseRocky Mountain Spotted FeverEhrilichiosisBabesiosis STARI (southern tick associated rash illness)TularemiaAND now an allergy to Red Meat!

5. HistoryFirst identified by Dr. Thomas Platts-Mills, (allergy specialist) University of Virginia, 2008Since 2002, his team was researching allergic reactions to the cancer drug, Cetuximab. Most of the patients displaying the allergy were from the Southeast US and tested positive for Alpha-galactose anti bodies

6. The mystery was what triggered the immune system to develop antibodies to Alpha-galactose? Serendipity: Platts-Mills, developed the allergy after being bitten by Lone Star ticks, and tested positive for alpha-gal anti bodiesThere is something in the tick saliva that triggers the development of antibodies (enzymes, parasites)

7. The allergen is a sugar, alpha-galactoseMost food allergies are from proteinsAlpha-galactose found in red meat, Beef, Lamb, Pork, Venison----MammalThe sugars found in meat from mammals is also in toothpaste, lotions, sunscreens, antibiotics and in some cases, vaccines. The flu shot, for instance, has gelatin in it, which comes from mammals.Reaction occurs 3 – 6 hours after eatingMost allergic reactions to food occur immediatelyAlpha galactose present in the fat, and fat takes longer to digest.

8. SymptomsMild to Life ThreateningHivesPoison ivy-like RashSneezingNauseaAsthmaHeadacheLow Blood PressureAnaphylaxis

9. Characteristic BiteIn most cases (not always) The bite takes a long time to healItchyHivesLeaves a lingering hard spot under the skinLength of time of attachment does not seem to matter. The bite is all that is needed.

10. Personal History2009 Lone Star tick biteTwo days after the bite, huge hivesThe bite took two weeks to heal completely.Woke up in the morning with hivesHives stopped after two months

11. 2011 “Peoples Pharmancy” Dr. Platts-Mills guest2012 Chigger bitesRestarted the allergic responseSlightly more severeMorning hives, poison ivy-like rashTested positive for alpha galatose antibodies

12. Prevention

13.

14. ChiggersLarvae feed on skin cellsDo not burrow into fleshInjects digestive enzymes which forms a hole in skinWhen finished feeding it drops off. Itching and lesions start after they are gone. After feeding it develops into a nymph and feeds on plants.

15. ChiggersThe rim on the dime is a little less than 1mm wide. The larvae is 0.2 mm in size.AdultLarvaeApproximate size

16. TreatmentPrevention: Protect yourself in the field (backyard)Avoidance: No steak for you.Wait. Generally believed that the allergy will go away in 3 to 4 years, IF you are not re-bitten and re exposed. Some web sites suggest the allergy is forever.AntihistaminesDesensitization (currently the effectiveness is questionable)Epi PenJapanese Knotweed
