Refraction - II Dr Ajai: Transcript
Agrawal Additional Professor Department of Ophthalmology AIIMS Rishikesh Acknowledgement Photographs in this presentation are courtesy of Kanskis Clinical Ophthalmology. pp. 503 – 506, and 525 (24.1). Mr. Richter. Agenda. Warm-Up. Notes:. The Speed of Light. Index of Refraction. Angle of Refraction. Total Internal Reflection. Dispersion . Objectives: We Will Be Able To…. RAY OPTICS -I Refraction of Light: Refraction is the phenomenon of change in the path of light as it travels from one medium to another (when the ray of light is incident obliquely). It can also be de Unit 8. How we use light to see.. To the physicist, the colors of things are not in the substances of the things themselves.. Color is in the eye of the beholder and is provoked by the frequencies of light emitted or reflected by things.. When light travels from one material to another it usually changes direction. The bending of light that occurs at the borderline of two materials is called . refraction. Geometrical concepts:. -incident ray. Mr. . . Dvorsky. SNC2D1. Review of last chapter. From the last chapter, we know how light behaves when it travels in space or in the air – i.e. it travels in a straight line.. When light strikes a plane mirror, the angle of incidence = the angle of reflection. . Intro to Refraction. Take 3 cups from the front, labeled 1,2,3. . Observe each straw through the side of the cup as you slowly turn the cup. . DO NOT STIR THE CONTENTS!. Write down your observations. . CHAPTER 7. What is Refraction?. What is Optical Density?. The Laws of Refraction. The Refractive index . Angle of Incidence / Refraction. Total Internal Reflection. Refraction is the change in direction of light when it passes from one medium to another.. Define refractive index.. Demonstrate refraction.. State the Laws of Refraction.. Solve problems about refraction.. HL: Solve problems about refractive index in terms of relative speeds.. Give examples of refraction in nature.. Transparent substances refract light. It’s not magic… it’s science!. How light Refracts. Refraction is due to changes in the speed of light.. In space, light travels at 300 000 km/s. Space is a vacuum, and there are no particles to get in the way of light and slow it down.. Interferometry: Theory. Pawan Bharadwaj, Gerard Schuster, Ian Mallinson. KAUST. 110 km. 110 km. Standard OBS Receiver Gather. Super-virtual OBS Receiver Gather. Problem: . Short Streamer=Missing Low-Wavenumber Components . is the bending of light as it passes from one medium into another.. refraction. N. q. w. q. A. Note: the angle of incidence . q. A. . in air and the angle of refraction . q. A. . in water are each measured with the normal . light bends or refracts when it moves from one medium to another. the light bends because it changes speed. if light slows down it bends toward the normal. if light speeds up it bends away from the normal. o. . What is the angle of incidence in glass?. Problem 1. Light travels from crown glass (n=1.52) into air (n=1.00). The angle of refraction in air is 60. o. . What is the angle of incidence in glass?.
