Do Now- Define

“Manifest Destiny” based on the quote

below.

Our manifest destiny is to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions.

America is destined for better deeds. We have no interest in the scenes of antiquity, only as lessons of avoidance of nearly all their examples. The expansive future is our arena, and for our history. We are entering on its untrodden space, with the truths of God in our minds, beneficent objects in our hearts, and with a clear conscience unsullied by the past.

We are the nation of human progress, and who will, what can, set limits to our onward march? Providence is with us, and no earthly power can. We point to the everlasting truth on the first page of our national declaration, and we proclaim to the millions of other lands, that "the gates of hell" -- the powers of aristocracy and monarchy -- "shall not prevail against it." Who, then, can doubt that our country is destined to be the great nation of futurity?

Manifest Destiny

Belief that it was God-given

obligation

to rule all the land between the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts in North America

Coast to coast

empire

Westward ExpansionSlide4

Belief!!!!!!!!

Not a law!!!!!!!!!!!

Not a Presidential speechAlthough some Presidents believed it and it was part of their platform

Not a doctrineSlide5
Slide6

Why we had this belief?

Things were going good/ nationalistic cockiness

Quick territorial expansion with La. Purchase, etc.

US expanding so quickly that God must be on our side- God given obligation

It was our duty to spread our culture

White man’s burden

US way of life (culture, religion, govt etc.) was so special that the world would be better if we spread it!!

(American Exceptionalism)Slide7

Euphemism

Reality of Manifest Destiny?

A nice word for IMPERIALISMWe had to conquer others to achieve Manifest Destiny

Forcing our culture way of life on othersSlide8

“American Progress”-John Gast

Slide11

Problems in achieving Manifest Destiny

We have to take it from others!!

Mexico owned most of the land

England claimed Oregon and had Canada

Russia claimed part of Oregon

Natives are living throughout the territory

US not a military force, so how could we get it and defend it!!!

We had to get people to move out there if we do ever get it!

Many in Northeast didn’t want the land-future problems!!!!Slide12

Positives in achieving Manifest Destiny

Communication/technological advances

Roads/railroads/telegraph

Immigrants pouring in to US caused overcrowding in the east, so people started to want to move west

Not really many people living in the area we wanted!!Slide13
