Dress for the weather and with comfort in mind.

You will likely be on your feet long hours in a concrete or asphalt parking lot or garage.

1

Prepare for the event:

2

Bring water, snacks and/or a meal

Light refreshments may be served, but bring what you need for your shift.

Know where to go ahead of time

Your event organizer should have sent you information about where to go, where to park and other site specific information before the event. If you did not receive them, talk to the organizer ahead of time, so you’re not late.

3

4

Know what to expect

Read any training materials sent to you ahead of time, so you know what to

expect.

If you need any special accommodations to perform the tasks in the volunteer packet, let the event organizer

know.

Vehicle Leak Testing Event

Volunteer Orientation Overview

The day of the event:

Fill out the volunteer sign in sheet and photo release

We’ll take photos of volunteers testing cars at many of our events. If you do not want your photo released, coordinate with the event organizer to ensure your photos will not be used.

2

Participate in the volunteer orientation

Most events will include a short volunteer orientation the day-of the event. Bring your questions about the event. You will learn more about your task for the event and meet your fellow volunteers.

3

Test vehicles for leaks

Volunteers will

talk

to vehicle owners

about the program and

test

vehicles for leaks.

Each location will be set-up differently, so

pay

attention to the specific instructions

from your

volunteer organizer.

4

Report on vehicle leak test results

Volunteers will record the results of the leak test for each car into an information packet. Volunteers will

interact

with vehicle owners about their leak test result as they return to their cars.

1

Wear a safety vest and a smile.

You’ll be provided with a Don’t Drip and Drive safety vest, so you are visible to drivers. In most cases, vehicle owners have knowledge of the leak testing event ahead of time, but some may not remember or may not have received notice. Be prepared to answer basic questions about how the tests will be carried out and questions about why we’re testing.

You’ll find more campaign information on the back page of this packet, under talking points. If you’re asked a question you can’t answer, direct the person to the event organizer.

Sample introduction script:

I’m a volunteer with (name of nonprofit or DD&D), and we’re testing cars for oil leaks, today. Can we test your car today? If it seems like they need more information, let them know:We’ll roll a plastic sheet under your car to see if there are any drips, let you know if we see any leaks, won’t need to get inside of your car or under the hood, and we can do it while you work/shop/etc.

If the driver agrees to the test

You will be given a supply of numbered vehicle placards, a clipboard, blue tape and a pen.

2

3

If the driver does not agree to the test

Ask the driver to put the opt-out card on their dash. If the driver does not agree, let them leave. Volunteers will not test cars without placards.

Task: The Recruiter

Vehicle Leak Testing Event

Volunteer Task Details

The Recruiter is the first point of contact for vehicle owners with the event.

The recruiter explains the vehicle leak test to the driver, asks their permission to test their car and collects initial information from the driver and lets them know when and where to come back to get their results.

Tear the vehicle placard along the horizontal perforation to detach the number placard. Tape the vehicle number placard

(top of the sheet with number) on

the car window facing toward the parking lot’s driving lane, so it is visible to volunteer testers.

Don’t

put tape on the vehicle’s paint.

Put the bottom half of the placard on the clipboard and hand the driver the clipboard, and ask them to fill in their first and last name on the

ticket, or fill it out for them.

Detach the claim ticket

(small perforated part with the number on the bottom right of the card) from

the driver information ticket

and

give it to the driver.

Ask

the driver to come back

when they’re done

shopping/working/etc.

with

the ticket to receive their leak test results and candy/ice cream.

Place the driver information card

(bottom right perforated part of the card) in

the envelope taped to the back of your clipboard.

Vehicle Leak Testing Event

Volunteer Task Details

Task: The Tester

The Tester is the person putting drip sheets under cars.

The Tester indicates the test start time

on the vehicle placard and

deploys test sheets under cars. Testers have minimal interaction with vehicle owners.

1

Wear a safety vest and wait for permission.

Testers wait for Recruiters to receive permission from the vehicle owner before deploying the drip sheet. Testing can start while the owner is still talking to the Recruiter, as long as permission has been given. Supplies needed:

Enough drip sheets to test all of the cars in your assigned area

Cart to carry all of the drip sheets Pen to write test time on vehicle number placard Knee pads (optional)

2

Deploy drip sheets

Drip sheets will be provided to testers individually rolled up in an easy to use container or cart. Testers should roll out drip sheets under the front of the car within the first few minutes after the engine has stopped running. Testers will write the time they rolled the sheet under the car on the vehicle number

placard, taped to the car by the recruiter.

Vehicle Leak Testing Event

Volunteer Task Details

Task: The Sheet Puller

The Sheet Puller pulls drip sheets from under cars after 30 minutes has

elapsed.

The

Sheet Puller will be assigned to a parking lot zone. The Sheet Puller will pull drip sheets from under cars, leaving those with leaks and removing those without leaks. The Recorder will follow the Sheet Puller.

1

Suit up for safety and comfort and gather supplies.

Sheet pullers should wear knee pads and a safety vest. They will need the following supplies:

1 sheet of dot stickers

1 empty cart

1 pair kneepads 1 claw grabber (optional)Several sheets of paper towelsTrash bag tied to cart

2

Pull sheets from under cars.

Identify cars in your assigned zone where 30 minutes has elapsed since drip sheets were deployed. Pull sheets out from under vehicles (you may need to be on your knees or use a trash grabber.

If the vehicle has no leak:

Roll up the drip sheet and place it in your cartIf the vehicle has a leak: Leave the drip sheet rolled out next to the vehicle for the recorder to see Place a dot sticker on the vehicle number placard

Volunteer Task Details

Task: The Recorder

The Recorder writes down leak results and assigns intervention strategies .

The

Recorder follows the

Sheet Puller and records leak results. If a car has a leak, the Recorder assigns the intervention strategies at random to those vehicles.

1

Gather supplies and wear your safety vest

Recorders should wear a safety vest, so they are visible working in the parking lot. Recorders need the following supplies:

1 pen, 1 regular

sharpie, 1 fine point sharpie

1 legal-size clipboard with envelope taped to itEnough basic packets for 15% of the cars in your zone (0.15 x number of cars in your zone)Enough intervention strategies for 15% of the cars in your zoneMaster leak sheet

2

Follow the sheet puller to start recording

The sheet puller will pull sheets from under cars and indicate whether they have leaks by placing a

sticker

dot on the vehicle number placard for

leaks and leaving the drip sheet behind.

If a car has no leak,

the drip sheet will be removed by the sheet puller. These drivers will receive a pre-filled no leak packet. No need to stop here.

If a car has a leak,

the drip sheet will be

left

behind for you to view. Fill out the basic packet with the following information:

Write the vehicle placard number

inside the packet in the promotional code box on the $50 off

coupon (pen

)

Check the box that indicates

the

vehicle

has

a leak,

check the box next to the color

of the leak,

and

circle the

location

of the leak on the vehicle graphic. (regular sharpie

)

Assign an intervention strategy: To randomly assign intervention strategies, the event organizer

will tell you which strategy number to begin with. You will assign strategies in numeric order

starting at the number assigned to you.

Note the strategy assigned on the basic packet in the top right corner

Vehicle Leak Testing Event

Volunteer Task Details

Task: The Interceptor

The Interceptor gives vehicle owners their leak results when they return to their cars.

Interceptors work in groups assigned to a zone of the parking lot.

As vehicle owners return to their cars, Interceptors provide leak

results and try to collect contact information from leakers.

1

Gather supplies and be organized.

Interceptors should wear safety vests, so they can be seen in the parking lot. They will work together and share the leaker list and master leak sheet of the leak report packets for the cars in their area. Interceptors will need the following supplies:

Clipboard

1 pen, 1 colored sharpie List of the vehicle placard numbers of leakers in their zone Master leak sheet with the vehicles in their zone

2

Intercept vehicle owners as they return to their cars

Some vehicle owners may approach you for their results, others may walk straight to their car. Your team of

interceptors’

goal is to talk to all vehicle owners in your zone before they leave. Ask vehicle owners for their claim ticket and determine whether they are on the leak list. (If they lost their claim ticket, get the placard number off their car.)If they don’t have a leak, give them their basic packet – Sample Script:Thank you for participating in our leak testing event. It looks like your car did not have a visible leak, today. (Hand them the packet) This packet includes information about vehicle leaks and a coupon for a free professional leak inspection and discount on repairs if you need them. Feel free to share it with your friends or use it if you have another vehicle with a leak.

Slide8

Task: The Interceptor (continued)

3

Distribute strategies for leaking vehicles

If

they have a

leak,

Interceptors will provide basic information, distribute the intervention strategy and request vehicle owner contact information. Driver information cards will indicate the strategy that should be given to the driver. For all strategies, ensure the vehicle placard number has been recorded on the intervention. Sample Script - ALL:Thank you for participating in our leak testing event. Our test showed that your car had a leak. (Show them the leak result). The leak came from [area of the car] and was [this color], which means it is likely a [type of leak]. This packet has some helpful things to know about vehicle leaks and a coupon for a free professional leak test and up to $50 off repairs at local repair shops. 1. Basic Packet Script: Only do sample script for basic packet.2. Window Cling Strategy Script:We also have this cute little window cling to remind you to get your leak fixed. It goes in your window like an oil change reminder. You can use this cling just like the coupon in your packet by turning it in at a participating repair shop for a free professional leak test and up to $50 off repairs. Can I put this in your car for you? If no, hand it to them and ask them to put it in their car. If they refuse to take the cling, note it on the master leak sheet.3. Third Party Mechanic Diagnosis Script: We have hired an independent mechanic instructor from Renton Technical College to be available today to look at your leak and give you more information at no cost to you. He is not affiliated with any shop so he won’t try to sell you anything. He is very knowledgeable and informative. It will take about 5 minutes, and will be free. Just take your car to [location] at [time] and he can take a look at it for you. Be sure to bring this card, because this is your ticket for this service.

4

Collect contact information

Script – All owners of leaking vehicles:

One of our intentions for this event is to help us better understand how to improve our program. We would like to contact you in

a few

months with a short survey. We will not share, sell or use your contact information for any other purpose.

Would

you be willing to provide your contact information?

If they ask, tell them it’ll be a 5 minute survey.

If they say yes, ask them to fill out the back of their owner information card and collect it back from

them (or fill it out for them).

Be sure the card indicates which strategy they received. Thank them and encourage them to get candy at nearest location.

If they say no, thank them and encourage them to get candy.

For

all cars,

remove number placard from their car before they leave.

For

all leakers,

record observations on master sheet (gender, age range, additional comments)

Vehicle Leak Testing Event

Volunteer Talking Points

Answering Questions About the Project

Volunteers working at vehicle leak testing events may be asked questions about their events or the overall campaign.

The following talking points will help you answer those questions. If you receive a question you can’t answer, please direct the person to the event organizer.

Driver Benefits to Vehicle Leak Testing

Don’t get stranded! A leaky car isn’t a reliable car.

Whether you’re on your daily commute or road tripping on a vacation, a little car maintenance could save you a lot of hassle - and money.

Extend the life of your car. Finding and fixing vehicle leaks is a great way to keep your car on the road longer, so you have more years before you need to buy a replacement.

Environmental Benefits to Testing

Protect Puget Sound. Not only does fixing vehicle leaks help you care for your cars, over the long run, it also is good for our environment.

Here in Washington State, we’re releasing 7 million quarts of motor oil into the Puget Sound basin annually. Think about it,

7 million

quarts of oil wasted each year!

Given that the average quart of motor oil costs $5-10 dollars, we estimate that consumers are pouring $53,615,500 down the drain each year. You could do so many more things with your hard-earned money than leak oil into Puget Sound.

Who We Are as a Group

The Stormwater Outreach for Regional Municipalities (STORM) consortium and local non-profit organizations interested in protecting Puget Sound have taken the lead on communicating ‘fixing vehicle leaks’ as a best practice, via a targeted regional campaign program called “Don’t Drip & Drive.”

“Don’t Drip & Drive” is made possible by a grant from the Washington Department of Ecology. Pierce County was awarded the grant on behalf of the STORM consortium. The grant is leveraged with another grant from the Puget Sound Partnership awarded to

Futurewise

on behalf of the King County Education, Communication and Outreach Network.

The overall goal of the program is to provide vehicle owners throughout the Puget Sound region with resources to help them get their vehicles inspected for leaks and have them fixed, if they have a leak.

About the testing event:

Today’s testing event is organized by

[organization]

in cooperation with

[company].

Volunteers will be on-site from

[times],

and conducting leak testing from
